A mill motif carved as an altar makes St. Thomas Church a distinctive cultural attraction in Tribsees. The Western Pomeranian Potato Museum offers a very different focus, while the waterway rest area adds canoe rental as another option. The attractions here thus include church art, a museum devoted to a clearly defined subject, and an activity on the water.

St. Thomas Church as a focus of cultural history

St. Thomas Church was first mentioned in a document in 1245. It is known for a unique mill altar: no other church has a mill motif carved as an altar. The rest of the furnishings offer further historical connections and point to different periods of creation and places of origin.

Seven carved reliefs from a pulpit in St. Jacobi Church in Lübeck date from 1547 and are now in St. Thomas Church. A bell cast in 1485 from the former St. Jürgen Chapel is also located there. The epitaph depicts the Last Judgment, is surrounded by 25 coats of arms, and is dedicated to Christian von Küssow, who died in 1577. The new organ, built by Karl August Buchholz of Berlin, was first played at Christmas 1831.

The dates refer to different things: the church’s first documentary mention, dated furnishings, the organ’s first performance, and the year the dedicatee died. This makes it possible to distinguish the histories of the church and its objects rather than reading the details as a single historical event.

St. Thomas Church is on the Via Baltica, the Baltic Sea branch of the Way of St. James. Alongside its art history, the pilgrimage route can therefore also be a point of interest if you choose Tribsees for a spiritual theme.

Canoe rental and accommodation options

The Tribsees waterway rest area offers canoe rental. Overnight stays are possible there only in your own tent; facilities include showers, toilets and Wi-Fi. If you want to stay there, your choice will therefore depend on whether you want to use your own tent. If you are looking for a different type of accommodation, you can take this restriction into account from the outset. Check the operator’s latest information on canoe rental and facilities before your trip, as these details may change.

A different cultural theme

The Western Pomeranian Potato Museum in Tribsees is considered the only potato museum in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Compared with the sacred art of St. Thomas Church, it offers a distinctive thematic focus. Tribsees thus brings together different cultural interests: church art and history on the one hand, and the clearly defined subject of potatoes on the other.
