The ten-metre-high observation tower on Lake Eixen is a striking landmark in Eixen: the water, a cycling tour through the village, and the architectural and art history of the village church offer different ways to explore the area. When planning your visit, you can focus on these themes individually or combine them.
Water, Views and Cycling Routes
Lake Eixen is located within the municipality of Eixen. A ten-metre-high observation tower offers an idyllic view across the lake. The site has a bathing beach, a volleyball court, and a bathing and fishing jetty. Birdwatching and nature observation are also possible. Visitors can choose from a range of activities: those looking to spend time by the water will find a beach and jetty, while those wishing to explore the area more attentively can include birdwatching and nature observation. The volleyball court adds a sporting activity to the options.
The lake also has a specific place in route planning. The “Around Semlow” cycle tour passes through Eixen and includes a detour to Lake Eixen; the site is connected to cycling routes. It is helpful to distinguish between the two: the tour passes through Eixen, while the lake is included as a detour. This makes it possible to distinguish the route as the broader point of reference and the lake as a specifically named part of the tour.
Architectural and Art History of the Village Church
The village church in Eixen is a fieldstone building dating from the mid-13th century. Brick gables and brick window surrounds add another material to the fieldstone structure. Some of the painted decoration also dates from the 13th century and was uncovered during restoration. The architecture and murals therefore lead back to the same early period, while showing different aspects of the church: its construction on the one hand and the surviving painted decoration on the other.
A winged altar in the village church features figures of saints, the Coronation of the Virgin, and Saint George on its front. There are panel paintings on the reverse. The work was probably carved in Lübeck around 1530. The front and back offer two specific areas to focus on; at the same time, the attribution to Lübeck is explicitly a matter of conjecture. The pulpit of St George’s Church in Eixen was made in 1744 in the workshop of Stralsund woodcarver Michel Müller.
Lake Festival in August
The annual Lake Festival at Lake Eixen takes place in August and features the fireworks display “Lake Eixen in Flames”. Dates and programme may vary. If you would like to plan your visit around the festival, check the latest event details in advance.
Vorpommern-RĂĽgen in a Wider Context
For a broader perspective, Eixen can be distinguished from the wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Rügen. There are an estimated 60 or so museums in Vorpommern-Rügen district. The district also includes the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula chain, as well as the island of Rügen and the nearby islands of Hiddensee and Ummanz. Cultural points of interest include the old town of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar”, and the Störtebeker Festival. These examples provide a regional context; the main local themes for a visit to Eixen remain the lake, the cycling tour, and the village church.
