Glowe brings together several distinct sides of a Baltic Sea getaway: fine sand by the harbour and promenade, a stony stretch of coast east of the harbour, and hiking and cultural destinations in the local districts. These differences can help you tailor your stay to the experiences you are looking for.

Sandy Beach and Stony Shore

The fine-grained sandy beach stretches from the harbour along the promenade to beyond the Kurplatz. It is about 1,300 metres long and has 13 beach access points. There is a beach volleyball court at access point 2. The section in front of the harbour, by access points 1 to 4, is suitable for families with children; the natural current makes the water by the shore especially shallow there.

East of the harbour, a different stretch of coast begins: a pebble beach with an adjoining raised shoreline. It serves as a starting point for longer beach walks and exploratory trips. Glowe therefore offers two distinct ways to spend time by the water: a fine-grained sandy beach and a stony shore with a raised shoreline.

Promenade and Views

The promenade, about one kilometre long, runs between the Kurplatz and Cape Königshörn. From sun terraces or benches, you can look out across the Baltic Sea to Cape Arkona. Its route and viewpoints give the coastal area a different character from the pebble beach east of the harbour.

The Glowe waterway rest area is right beside the small Cape Königshörn, opposite Cape Arkona. At the harbour building, an observation tower about seven metres high offers panoramic views across the entire bay. So, as well as the views from the promenade, there is an elevated vantage point from which you can take in the bay as a whole.

Hiking and Exercise

Seven signposted hiking routes, ranging from 5.9 to 8.2 kilometres, offer a choice of distances. If you want to compare a walk by the water with a longer route, these stated distances can help you decide. The trails offer a distinct focus alongside the beach areas and promenade.

Glowe Spa Park also brings together different interests in one place: it is located directly above Glowe’s pebble beach and features numerous stone sculptures by artist Mile Prerad. There are also twelve outdoor fitness stations, where adults of all ages can work out. Art and exercise are two distinct features of the park.

Historic Sites in Bobbin and Spyker

The Gothic Church of St. Pauli stands in Glowe’s Bobbin district. Built from fieldstones around 1400, it is the only surviving fieldstone church on the island of Rügen. Its architectural style, materials and approximate date of construction give the site a distinct historic character.

The castle complex in the Spyker district tells a different story. It was once the residence of Swedish Field Marshal Gustav von Wrangel and was first mentioned in 1318. Designed in the Renaissance style, the complex is a popular stop for hikers and cyclists on Glowe’s cycling and hiking trail network. While St. Pauli is defined by its Gothic fieldstone architecture and a construction date around 1400, Spyker is notable for its former role as a seat of power, its mention in 1318 and its Renaissance design.
