West of the village of Oebelitz is a rewetted area where flora and fauna can adapt to the conditions there. At the same time, this development does not conflict with intensively used agricultural land. This specific landscape gives Millienhagen-Oebelitz a nature-focused theme; Steinfeld Manor House adds a historical perspective.
A landscape with different spatial contexts
The municipality is surrounded by, or directly overlapped by, the Trebeltal, Barthe and Hellberge Landscape Protection Area. This places a specific landscape west of Oebelitz alongside protected-area contexts that apply to the municipality. This distinction helps you view the municipality’s landscape at different scales.
The Lübeck–Stettin long-distance riding trail also crosses the municipality. If you would like to include it in a specific ride, check the route and current conditions in advance.
Steinfeld Manor House and its history
Steinfeld Manor House adds local history to the landscape, with two successive periods of ownership. It was owned by the von Oebelitz family until the 15th century; after the 15th century, it passed to Neuenkamp Abbey. For travellers interested in the history of manor houses, this change offers a specific point of historical interest.
A rest stop in Oebelitz
A tourist rest facility was established in Oebelitz at the end of 2015 as a place to take a break and stop; it included an integrated children’s playground. If you would like to plan a stop there, check its condition and accessibility in advance.
Vorpommern-RĂĽgen as a wider travel horizon
Vorpommern-Rügen provides the wider regional context. The district includes the island of Rügen and the offshore islands of Hiddensee and Ummanz; the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula chain is also part of it. This illustrates the broad range of landscapes found across the district. On Rügen, the beech forests in Jasmund National Park are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe.” The old town of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar.” These two examples represent different nature and culture themes in Vorpommern-Rügen.
The district’s cultural offering is also diverse: Vorpommern-Rügen is estimated to have around 60 museums. In Ribnitz-Damgarten, the Galerie im Kloster preserves, maintains and manages the district’s art collection. It comprises around 500 works of painting, graphic art, sculpture, ceramics, silk painting and textile design, dating from the late 19th century to the present day. The gallery also has a permanent exhibition of prints by Lyonel Feininger, as well as changing exhibitions featuring works from the collection. If you plan to visit, it is advisable to check the current visiting conditions.
The gallery in the Orangerie in Putbus offers a different perspective on art and culture. The historic building hosts up to eight exhibitions each year, as well as readings and concerts. This allows you to compare the collection profile of the Galerie im Kloster in Ribnitz-Damgarten with the exhibition and events programme in Putbus. The Störtebeker Festival is also among the cultural events for which Vorpommern-Rügen is known; check specific dates in advance.
