Franzburg offers a clear contrast between architectural and church history and outdoor activities when planning your trip. A key cultural highlight is the monastery and palace church; for walks and nature, there are the Hellberge Hills and Mühlengrund Park, where a circular route begins. In town, a monastery garden and Café Wieckhaus add to the choice.

Monastery and Palace Church: History and Art

The monastery and palace church in Franzburg was built by Cistercian monks in the 13th century and is considered the town’s landmark. Franzburg Palace Church is a transept of the former monastery church and, as the palace church of the Pomeranian ducal house, is one of the few surviving testimonies to the Reformation era in this region.

Inside, the church preserves a sandstone epitaph with life-size figures dating from 1615, a 16th-century crucifix and a 15th-century Madonna on a crescent moon. These works span several centuries of religious art. Guided tours are available by arrangement; please agree on a time before your visit.

Hellberge Hills and Circular Route: Nature and Exercise

The nature trail that begins in Franzburg leads directly into the Hellberge Hills nature reserve and is aimed especially at nature lovers and hiking tourists. The Hellberge Hills were shaped by the last Ice Age, which ended around 10,000 years ago; today, they are a popular recreation area.

The circular route “Nat(o)ur & Kult(o)ur am Richtenberger See” begins at Mühlengrund Park. It has no inclines, is also suitable for cycling and passes through Richtenberg. The difference in choosing between the two lies in their focus: the nature trail is aimed especially at nature lovers and hiking tourists, while the circular route’s specific features are its flat course and suitability for cycling. Surface conditions may vary.

Mühlengrund Park and Monastery Garden

Mühlengrund Park covers about two hectares. Its grounds include paths, ponds, extensive lawns and numerous fruit trees. The fact that the circular route begins here connects the park with another of the local nature and cultural attractions.

Established in 2006, the monastery garden invites locals and visitors to linger. It includes green spaces, a small playground, and flowerbeds with herbs and fruits of the season. Seasonal planting gives the garden different accents throughout the year. By comparison, Mühlengrund Park has ponds, lawns and fruit trees, while the monastery garden has flowerbeds with herbs and fruits of the season, as well as a small playground.
