Prerow can be explored through a range of themes: maritime history and regional architecture sit alongside coastal scenery, nature observation and water sports. When planning a stay, you can first consider which of these perspectives interests you most, then choose suitable places and activities accordingly.
Coastal Scenery and Nature Observation
Prerow is located in the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park. The coastal region associated with Prerow includes the Baltic Sea, lagoon waters, dunes, coastal forests and salt marshes. This diversity describes the wider landscape and offers a range of themes for exploring the region.
Along the Darßer Ort circular trail, viewpoints offer opportunities to observe red deer, wild boar and a variety of bird species. From there, you can also see the new land formations at Darßer Ort. The trail includes boardwalk sections through alder carrs and dune landscapes. Wildlife, open landscapes and stretches of woodland give the trail several distinct impressions.
NATUREUM is located around five kilometres west of Prerow. You can reach it from Prerow by bicycle, horse-drawn carriage or on foot. The distance is approximate; check trail conditions before setting out. This lets you factor the visit into your plans without assuming an exact walking or travel time.
Maritime History and Architecture
The Darß Museum, centrally located in Prerow, is accessible on foot or by bicycle. It covers maritime history, the lives of fishermen and seafarers, regional architecture, and the flora and fauna of the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park. These themes bring together cultural history and the national park’s natural heritage in one place. Temporary exhibitions may change.
The Seamen’s Church is the oldest church on the Darß peninsula and was built in 1726/28. In addition to services, it hosts exhibitions, talks and concerts; individual programmes vary. Prerow’s carved, brightly painted front doors also reflect the town’s maritime history and keep this heritage alive.
The museum and viewpoints offer different perspectives: the museum focuses on topics including coastal history, regional architecture and nature, while Darßer Ort offers opportunities to observe wildlife and new land formations. If you would like to include both culture and nature, you can factor these two perspectives into your day’s plans.
Water and Getting Around
Prerow Beach offers kitesurfing, windsurfing, sailing and stand-up paddleboarding. Local zoning and safety rules may apply. The Prerow Pier is designed to be accessible and can be reached on foot or by bicycle from the town centre. This gives you a choice of accessible places to visit and activities on the water as you explore the town.
Passenger boats for excursions on the lagoon waters and to Hiddensee are based at the harbour on the Prerow Stream. Timetables vary by season; check the dates if you are planning an excursion. The beach, pier and harbour offer different ways to enjoy the water, but should each be considered as a separate option when planning.
