Klausdorf was officially recognized as a state-approved resort on February 5, 2018. Its manor estate, the espalier fruit garden in the park and activities on the Bodden give the village a distinct character. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between locations: the following information about Barhöft and Zarrenzin concerns the municipality of Klausdorf, not the village of Klausdorf itself.
Manor Park, Vorpommernhus and Espalier Fruit
Some of the historic manor estate’s surviving features include the former inspector’s house, three farm buildings, the orangery and the park with its wall and observation tower. The manor park is a protected historic monument. The inspector’s house dates from around 1890 and is designed in the Neo-Baroque style.
Another building illustrates how the manor estate’s use has changed: the former large bull stable was extensively renovated in 2006 and converted into the Vorpommernhus. Today, the building houses a small gallery as well as the visitor and tourist information office. It is used for cultural events and also serves as the community center. The former observation tower on the manor estate was restored in 2012 and converted into the Klausdorf species conservation tower.
The reconstructed espalier fruit garden is also part of the manor park. Its four beds are each about 70 meters long and feature old and high-quality varieties of fruit trees and shrubs. These include berries, soft fruit, pome fruit and varieties of wall-trained espalier fruit. Together with the surviving buildings and the protected historic park, it makes the manor estate a focal point for visitors interested in architecture, local history and garden culture.
Nature and Water in Klausdorf
Klausdorf offers more than historic attractions: you can cycle through fields and forests, hike in nature and paddle on the Bodden. Beautiful beaches lie right on the Bodden. Cranes, white-tailed eagles and many other animals also make the village a draw for nature lovers.
When planning your own trip, you can easily distinguish between these interests: cycling and hiking are land-based activities, while paddling and the beaches involve the Bodden. The animals mentioned also add a wildlife focus to the nature theme, giving you the option of planning your stay around the local wildlife. This lets you choose the focus of your stay without combining the different offerings into a single excursion itinerary.
Barhöft and Zarrenzin in the Municipality of Klausdorf
In Barhöft, the national park exhibition is located in Haus am Kliff near the harbor, high on the Barhöft cliff and next to the observation tower, which is visible from afar. From the harbor, follow the signs toward the cliff. The exhibition presents the protected area’s landscape through photographs, drawings and interactive features; it is also aimed at adults and international visitors. It is accessible to wheelchair users, and accessible parking spaces are available at the building; please check visitor information before your arrival.
The observation tower next to the exhibition is 17 meters high. From there, the view extends across large parts of the national park and takes in islands, tidal flats, the Bodden and the Baltic Sea. Another viewpoint is along the path on the Barhöft cliff: it starts at the parking lot in Zarrenzin and leads along the old cliff to Barhöft. The route includes a small observation platform at the parking lot, with views of the Werder Islands and the Bodden waters. These locations are in different parts of the municipality from the village of Klausdorf, helping you distinguish between the excursion destinations geographically.
Barhöft harbor also offers options for planning your visit: all berths have electricity and drinking water. Fishing in fish-rich waters is listed as an activity there. Kayak trips to Hiddensee are another option from the harbor. The municipality therefore offers water-based activities as well as viewpoints.
