Visitors choosing Altenpleen for a stay will find a clear focus on nature watching: At KRANORAMA, the view is directed toward the Günzer Seewiesen, while KRANICHWELTEN adds insect and moorland worlds to the nature theme. A listed manor house provides a historic connection. The main things to consider when planning are the crane roosting season and getting to Günz.

Crane watching at Lake Günz

KRANORAMA is an accessible crane-watching station on Lake Günz. From there, visitors have a direct view of the Günzer Seewiesen, a European Special Protection Area for birds and a National Natural Heritage site. Kranichschutz Deutschland is developing the area in a way that is compatible with nature conservation. The observation station and protected landscape go hand in hand here: the nature experience draws attention both to the landscape and to its protection and development.

During the crane roosting season, visitors can sometimes observe up to 4,000 cranes at KRANORAMA from morning until evening. Thousands of geese and ducks, as well as numerous white-tailed eagles, may also be seen there. These figures refer to the crane roosting season, not the entire year. If you are travelling to see cranes, plan your visit around this season and bear in mind that sightings vary by season.

The route from the car park to the station also helps visitors find their way around: information boards and places to sit accompany the staged route to KRANORAMA. This means information and places to rest are located along the approach, not just at the observation station itself.

Rural villages in the municipality of Altenpleen lie on the edge of Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park. This landscape connection complements crane watching at the Günzer Seewiesen with another natural area in the region.

KRANICHWELTEN and events

The NABU KRANICHWELTEN Visitor Centre has a 20,000-square-metre outdoor area. It includes walk-through insect and moorland worlds, as well as places to sit and spend time. Alongside birds, insects and moors also come into focus. These different themes make KRANICHWELTEN a distinct addition to the observation station on Lake Günz.

The visitor centre is also the starting point for numerous excursions and other events, including the annual “Week of the Crane” in September. If a particular event is the reason for your trip, check the exact dates in advance.

Getting to Günz by bus or bicycle

Bus route 305 runs from Stralsund and Barth to Günz. From the stop, it is about a 500-metre walk to KRANICHWELTEN. For specific connections, check the latest timetable from the transport operator or the relevant transport authority.

A cycling route from Barth to KRANICHWELTEN follows the Baltic Sea Cycle Route and passes through Nisdorf and Günz. The route is about 18 kilometres long and can be cycled all the way. As current route conditions may affect your journey, check them before setting off.

The distance figures refer to different parts of the journey: around 500 metres is the walk from the bus stop to the visitor centre; approximately 18 kilometres is the cycling route from Barth. This helps you compare the two options without confusing the walking distance with the cycle route.

Historic connection and finding accommodation

Altenpleen’s listed manor house was built in the second half of the 19th century on the site of a former manor estate. It is privately owned. If you are considering a visit, check in advance whether visits are possible. The manor house is a historic landmark for the village, while crane watching and KRANICHWELTEN shape the nature-focused stay.

For specific excursion plans, also take the current bus timetable and the condition of the cycling route into account.
