Explore Karlsburg through specific waypoints and its local history: a short walk leads from the village ponds to the western side of the castle park. The historic centre features typical single-storey houses; the castle and park tell the story of different eras. If you are planning a stay, you will find a clear local focus here and can distinguish it from other themes in the wider destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald.

A Walk Through Karlsburg

The short walk begins at the two village ponds. It follows Nepziner Weg and Kirschenweg towards the forest, passes the “Nepziner Weg” residential development and reaches the western side of the castle park. The sequence of ponds, named roads, residential area and park boundary gives the walk a clear connection to the local area. For those finding their way by road, Karlsburg is also located on federal highway 109.

Typical single-storey houses shape the appearance of the historic centre; almost all have now been modernised. An early trace of the town’s history dates back to 1300: an entry in the oldest Greifswald town book mentions Johannes from Gnatzkow, “Jo de gnazkow”. The place, later renamed Karlsburg, is therefore considered to have been mentioned for the first time then. Little is known about its earliest history.

Castle and Park from Different Eras

The representative Baroque Karlsburg Castle was built in 1773. It remained privately owned until 1945; after 1945, it was used as a diabetes clinic and laboratory building. The year of the first mention and the castle’s construction date thus mark two widely separated stages in the history of the place.

Karlsburg Castle Park was laid out in the 19th century in the style of English landscape gardens. The park is also home to an 18th-century marble sculpture of the goddess Flora. The sculpture therefore dates from an earlier era than the park’s design. Together, these details provide two different points of reference for placing the castle park and local history in time. The walk reaches the western side of the park; its design history and the Flora sculpture add artistic and garden-historical aspects to this local connection.

Vorpommern-Greifswald as a Wider Context

Beyond Karlsburg, the wider destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald offers other nature and culture themes. The three nature parks cover almost 40 per cent of the district’s area. In the Ueckermünde Heath, hiking, cycling and horse riding offer a range of activities. Those interested in cycling routes will find several regional points of reference there: the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, part of the EuroVelo EV10 route, passes through the district. The Stettin Lagoon Circular Route and the Route of North German Romanticism are also regional cycle routes for exploring the district. Before setting out on a cycling tour, check current trail and signage conditions.

Museums also offer a distinctive way to discover the region. The Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald displays the Croy Tapestry from 1554, a cultural and historical artefact from the Reformation era. In Anklam, the Otto Lilienthal Museum, a technical museum dedicated to a notable person, focuses on aviation pioneer, mechanical engineer and humanist Otto Lilienthal in his home town. These regional museum themes are clearly distinct from Karlsburg’s local focus: here, the walk, historic centre, and the history of the castle and park take centre stage.

These themes are easy to distinguish when choosing a destination: Karlsburg offers a specific route for a walk and several historical points of interest; Vorpommern-Greifswald broadens the picture with nature, cycling routes and museums. This can help you decide whether to focus your stay primarily on Karlsburg’s local history or include other regional themes as well.
