The Peene Valley River Landscape Nature Park borders Quilow directly; there are opportunities for hiking and water-based activities there. The passenger ferry to Stolpe is also a useful landmark: a path across the fields leads from Quilow to the ferry. Cultural points of interest in Quilow and Klein Polzin offer a different focus. This lets you choose how to balance nature and water activities with the municipality’s cultural sites, according to your interests.

Path to the passenger ferry: route and access

From Quilow, a path about 2.5 kilometres long crosses the fields to a passenger ferry that also takes day-trippers and their bicycles across to Stolpe. Before setting out, check both the path conditions and the ferry service. On the Quilow side, cars are not permitted to drive up to the shore; parking bays are available along the path to the water. If you are travelling by car, bear this access restriction in mind when finding your way.

Culture in Quilow and Klein Polzin

Quilow Water Castle was renovated and reopened in 2020 for exhibitions, concerts, readings and workshops. Individual programmes may change, so check the latest dates in advance if you would like to attend an event. A seasonal information shop is located in the former fire station. Since it is seasonal, it is worth checking when it is open before planning to use it as a place to stop.

The “Trabbi” barn is also one of the sights in the municipality of Groß Polzin. Klein Polzin is home to three megalithic tombs in and around the Schnelle farmyard. Each has a different focus: the water castle hosts cultural programmes, the barn is another local attraction, and the megalithic tombs are part of the area’s archaeological heritage. This makes it possible to explore the cultural highlights whether you are especially interested in events or historical sites.

Vorpommern-Greifswald: nature and cycling routes

The wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald offers its own perspective on nature and cycling. The district’s three nature parks cover almost 40 per cent of its area. The Ueckermünde Heath is ideal for hiking, cycling and horse riding. Regional cycling routes that offer a way to explore the district include the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, part of EuroVelo route EV10, the Szczecin Lagoon Circular Route and the Route of North German Romanticism. Before setting out on a specific cycling trip, check the route conditions and signage.

Cultural and culinary destinations in Vorpommern-Greifswald

The cultural sites in the wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald also offer a range of different highlights. The Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald displays the Croy Tapestry from 1554, a unique cultural and historical artefact from the Reformation era. Anklam is home to the Otto Lilienthal Museum, a technical museum dedicated to the aviation pioneer, mechanical engineer and humanist Otto Lilienthal in his hometown. In Peenemünde, the Juliett U-461 is a museum ship in the harbour that visitors can explore on a tour. Check access conditions in advance. For a culinary highlight, a guided tour of Greifswald’s historic old town visits four local restaurants offering sweet and savoury treats. Together, these regional options—historical textiles, the history of technology, a museum tour and culinary discoveries—cater to a range of interests.
