A fine, white sandy beach is a defining feature of Karlshagen; in some places, it is up to 80 meters wide. There is also a lifeguarded beach, a sports beach and a harbor offering its own excursion opportunities. Whether you mainly want to swim, enjoy activities on the water or get to know the town better will help shape your travel plans.

Beach Days and Water Sports

The lifeguarded beach stretches for a total of 1,200 meters. There are also designated sections for naturism, dogs and sports. Their use may be regulated seasonally, so plan to visit these areas at a time that suits your travel dates. There are seven permanent beach volleyball courts.

Windsurfing, kitesurfing, surfing and stand-up paddleboarding are possible at the sports beach. The availability of seasonal courses or equipment may vary. This lets you choose between a more leisurely day at the beach and activities on the water, without having to fit both into a fixed daily schedule.

Harbor and Excursions on the Peenestrom

Excursion boats depart from Karlshagen Harbor for trips on the Peenestrom. Services depend on the operator and the season, so check in advance which departures fit your stay. The harbor has modern mooring facilities, pier berths and a slipway. Motorboats can be launched there for a fee.

There is also specific information to help you navigate the water: the harbor entrance branches off from the Peenestrom fairway at the PN32/Kr2 navigation mark. With a water depth of 3 to 4 meters, the harbor is navigable even for vessels with a deep draft. These details are especially useful for guests traveling by motorboat.

Nature, Cycling and Hiking Trails

The cycling and hiking trails around Karlshagen head toward PeenemĂĽnde and, via Zinnowitz, toward Koserow. They are considered suitable for families. As trail conditions and signage may change, it is worth checking locally before planning a specific route.

The Karlshagen Nature Conservation Center focuses on the nature and birdlife of Usedom. A natural history exhibition and a range of themed guided tours offer different ways to explore these subjects. This adds an activity centered on the island’s nature to the options for beach and water activities.

Local History and Events

Using historical documents and information boards, the local history museum shows how Karlshagen has developed. Topics include the founding of the town and the beginnings of tourism. Karlshagen Church also reflects different phases of construction: it was built in 1912, completely destroyed during the turmoil of war, rebuilt in 1953 and extensively renovated later.

Every summer, the Karlshagen Chalk Art Festival takes place in the beach forecourt and attracts several hundred participants. If you would like to include this event in your stay, check the exact dates before your trip.

Another event is the USEDOM BEACHCUP, first held in 2000 and originating in Karlshagen on Usedom. Held annually in Karlshagen, the cup involves approximately 1,500 players and around 100 courts; the scale may vary from one edition to another. The two events therefore differ not only in subject matter but also in scale.

Getting There and Eating Locally

Karlshagen is accessible by train: from Zinnowitz, you need to change trains once, then travel directly to the Baltic seaside resort of Karlshagen. As services and operators may change, check the current timetable before departure.

For a meal, restaurants at the harbor and near the beach, by the beach forecourt, serve Pomeranian home cooking, Italian cuisine and freshly caught fish. Individual restaurants and menus may change; together, the selection offers several types of cuisine in the two areas of town mentioned.
