Wilhelmsburg can be explored through two themes: its settlement and architectural history, and paths through a landscape of green meadows, forests, and clear lakes. This brings historic buildings and activities in the surrounding area into focus when planning a trip.

Village History and Historic Houses

The first village settlement was established in 1741 by six farmers. Further settlement followed, with colonists from the Palatinate. In the first half of the 19th century, Wilhelmsburg and MĂĽhlenhof became a state-owned estate. The estate served as a remount depot until the end of the Second World War.

One specific way to explore the area’s architectural history is the log house in Wilhelmsburg-Eichhof. It was built in 1744 on a fieldstone foundation; the half-timbered walls at the rear date from 1810. The house is divided into two residential units, each with a brick-built fireplace hood. Its restored interiors convey a sense of life in earlier times. The building thus combines details about construction and living arrangements with a glimpse into past living conditions.

Wilhelmsburg Manor House also tells the story of another period of construction: it was built using half-timbering in the first half of the 19th century and used for residential purposes after 1945.

Church, Culture, and Activities

Wilhelmsburg’s Protestant church is named Martin Luther Church. Planning for the village church spanned the years from 1842 to 1953. It is considered one of the few churches built during the GDR era; it also houses an organ from that period. The long interval between the start of planning and the later construction of the church gives local history a distinctive architectural focus.

Cultural offerings include traditional festivals and modern events. Check specific dates before your trip. A time-specific glimpse into another chapter was provided by the 2025 Day of Associations: at the time, a cultural association held guided tours of the former NVA barracks site in Eichhof. The site contained bunkers where Soviet-made missiles were stored until 1990. The tours relate to that event and are not a general promise of access for visits today.

Walking trails lead through the surrounding landscape for outdoor activities. Members of the MSV Wilhelmsburg club and guest riders can use the motocross track. The facility includes a children’s track of about 500 metres and campsites. As access rules and facility details may change, check the current conditions before visiting.

Vorpommern-Greifswald in a Wider Travel Itinerary

Beyond Wilhelmsburg, the Vorpommern-Greifswald district offers further ways to enjoy nature. The UeckermĂĽnde Heath invites visitors to hike, cycle, and ride; canoeing and opportunities to observe beavers are also part of the regional offering. Cycle paths cross the wider landscape along the Szczecin Lagoon, the Peene, Uecker, and Randow rivers. The Baltic Sea Cycle Route, part of the EuroVelo EV10 route, also passes through the district. Before a cycling trip, it is worth checking route conditions and signage.

The district’s cultural attractions are also spread across different locations. The port of Peenemünde is home to the Juliett U-461 submarine museum, which visitors can explore on a tour; check the current access conditions in advance. In Greifswald, the Pomeranian State Museum displays the Croy Tapestry of 1554, a unique cultural and historical artefact from the Reformation period. These places add to the picture of the region, while Wilhelmsburg itself offers its own themes for a stay, with its settlement history, log house, church, and surrounding landscape.
