Rothemühl brings together fairytale motifs with themes of nature and landscape. These include the fairytale and nature trail at the Märchen-Waldhaus Rothemühl and the Rothemühl Castle Rampart Nature Reserve. Its distinctive features range from a labyrinth, a witch’s house and nature knowledge to a Slavic hilltop castle on a push moraine and a kettle bog.
Fairytale Motifs and Nature Knowledge
The fairytale and nature trail at the Märchen-Waldhaus Rothemühl features a labyrinth, a witch’s house, a gently splashing waterwheel and many fairytale wooden figures. The Märchen-Waldhaus has been in existence for more than 20 years. The Waldhaus offers an engaging introduction to the flora and fauna native to the area.
The Castle Rampart and Nearby Routes
At the heart of the Rothemühl Castle Rampart Nature Reserve is a Slavic hilltop castle covering around 20 hectares, situated on a 125-metre-high push moraine. A seven-hectare kettle bog lies in the northern part of the protected area. Both the hilltop castle and the terrain, as well as the bog, shape the character of the nature reserve.
In the vicinity of Rothemühl, the Rothemühl Forest has a signposted network of riding, carriage, hiking and cycling trails. While the fairytale trail and the castle rampart have different thematic focuses, the forest puts the choice of how to get around front and centre.
In the wider destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald
Vorpommern-Greifswald also offers other nature experiences: the district’s three nature parks cover almost 40 percent of its area. The Ueckermünde Heath is ideal for hiking, cycling and riding. By comparison, the signposted network in the Rothemühl Forest also includes carriage routes. According to the current description, Ueckermünde Zoo is home to more than 1,120 native and exotic animals representing 95 species.
Various regional routes cross the district, making it a great place for cycling tours. The Baltic Sea Cycle Route, part of the EuroVelo EV10 route, passes through Vorpommern-Greifswald. The Stettiner Haff Circular Route and the Route of North German Romanticism are also cycling routes for exploring the district. Check trail conditions and signage before setting out on a specific tour.
Cultural attractions in Vorpommern-Greifswald include museums with a range of focuses. The Juliett U-461 is located in Peenemünde harbour and serves as a museum that visitors can explore on a tour; check current access arrangements before visiting. The Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald displays the Croy Tapestry of 1554, a unique cultural and historical artefact from the Reformation era. The Otto Lilienthal Museum in Anklam, his hometown, is dedicated to aviation pioneer, mechanical engineer and humanist Otto Lilienthal.
A culinary tour through Greifswald’s historic old town takes visitors to four restaurants serving sweet and savoury treats. In Ukranenland Torgelow, a boat trip uses the first reconstructed Slavic boat in Germany. Participants have to row themselves—an important difference to consider when choosing this activity.
