Discover Dierkow-Neu through its green spaces, paths, and distinctive details in the cityscape. The neighborhood’s architecture also tells the story of when it was built: if you’re planning a stay in Rostock, you’ll find concrete points of interest here for exploring neighborhood design and public open spaces.

Neighborhood Character and Green Space

Dierkow-Neu was built between 1983 and 1987 using large-panel construction. The rows of buildings, three to six stories high, form many small courtyards. The construction, building heights, and courtyard layout give the neighborhood a distinct architectural character and make it different from a visit focused solely on historic architecture.

In the central green space on Kurt-Schumacher-Ring, paths were adapted to meet current needs, particularly with regard to accessibility. The path design is therefore a defining feature, alongside the green space itself. Anyone interested in urban design will find concrete examples here rather than just general descriptions of the neighborhood.

The green space also features two distinctive design elements: the naturalistic neighborhood logo “Labyrinth” has been carefully restored. The sculpture “Der Kopf” (“The Head”), subtitled “Tag und Nacht” (“Day and Night”), by sculptor Wolfgang Friedrich, is also located there. The logo and sculpture add distinctive accents to the green space and can be viewed as part of its design.

Paths and Recreational Areas

A dedicated walking and cycling path runs along Dierkower Allee between Rövershäger Chaussee and the junction with Kurt-Schumacher-Ring. The path was renovated and made accessible over a length of around 500 meters between October 2019 and April 2020.

In the green spaces on Gutenbergstraße, a walking path runs parallel to the railway tracks across the large eastern meadow. There is also a public barbecue area available to local residents. Several recreational areas in green surroundings are located near the sports hall at Kurt-Schumacher-Ring 161a, including a skate park and playgrounds. The sports complex on Walter-Butzek-Straße includes a full-size football pitch suitable for competitive matches. Together, these places illustrate different aspects of the local range of recreational and physical activities.

The Dierkow weekly market takes place every Wednesday from 08:00 to 14:00 at Hannes-Meyer-Platz. If you’re planning a visit to the market, check the current opening hours in advance.

Rostock and Its Historic Center

Rostock itself has a history spanning more than 800 years and is one of the Baltic coast’s historic Hanseatic cities. The city was once an important trading center in northern Germany. For another cultural and historical highlight in the Rostock destination, a walking tour through the historic center passes, among other places, Universitätsplatz, the Monastery of the Holy Cross, Kröpeliner Straße, Neuer Markt, and St. Mary’s Church. The tour explores architecture, urban development, and Hanseatic traditions. Check with the provider for the latest tour details.

This lets you explore the neighborhood as a destination in its own right, while a walking tour through the historic center offers a different way to experience the city.
