The Old Castle near Sukow, buildings in Levitzow and the 35 km Panorama Tour each bring a different focus to Sukow-Levitzow. Particularly striking is the archaeological history of the refuge fort south of the present-day village of Sukow. In Levitzow, a watermill with a weir and a manor house with a park form an architectural focal point. The tour complements these themes with a specific route to Dornremelberg.

Archaeology at the Old Castle

The refuge fort south of the present-day village of Sukow, known as the “Old Castle,” is one of the oldest Slavic hillforts in Mecklenburg. Around the year 600, Slavs settled there and established a refuge fort. Excavations at the site identified the oldest Slavic pottery in Mecklenburg; today, this pottery is known as pottery of the Sukow group. The local history therefore encompasses two distinct points of reference: the refuge fort as a fortified site and the pottery as an archaeological find. Anyone interested in settlement history can consider both aspects at the same historic site.

Panorama Tour and climb to Dornremelberg

The 35 km Panorama Tour follows the state road to Levitzow. 1.5 km after the village church, the route leaves the road and climbs steeply to Dornremelberg on a level asphalt surface. Several details are important for navigating the route: the village church marks the distance to where the route leaves the road, and Dornremelberg is the destination of the steep section. The surface and gradient should be considered separately: the asphalt surface is level, while the climb is specifically described as steep. The total distance, reference point and features of this section help to break down the route in your mind.

Watermill and manor house in Levitzow

A watermill with a weir is located on Landesstraße 43 in Levitzow. At Schloßweg 10 stands a manor house with a park and a gate pier dating from 1745. The district’s register of listed buildings, edition dated 14 May 2024, includes both buildings. Their addresses and features offer distinct points of interest: the watermill and weir belong together, while the park and dated gate pier define the description of the manor house. These two clearly distinguishable examples offer a way to explore Levitzow’s architectural heritage.

Northwest Mecklenburg as a wider setting

Within the wider destination of Northwest Mecklenburg, the district includes the “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay” in the north and the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin” in the south. Terminal moraine ridges, gently undulating ground moraine plateaus, steep and gently sloping stretches of coast, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains shape the landscape of Northwest Mecklenburg. This north-south division helps put the district’s variety into context: the hills and Wismar Bay lie in the northern part, while the lake district and Lake Schwerin are in the south.

Another cultural attraction in the wider destination of Northwest Mecklenburg is Gadebusch Castle. The Renaissance castle, dating from 1573, is located in Gadebusch in the district of Northwest Mecklenburg. With reliefs in the regional Johann Albrecht style, it is a rare example of Mecklenburgian or North German Brick Gothic Renaissance.
