Castle history, a year-round cultural program and opportunities to observe nature in the Peene floodplains give Lelkendorf a distinctive character. When planning your trip, you can consider culture and nature as separate focuses: on the one hand, there is the estate, concerts and historic architecture; on the other, the floodplains and canoeing on the Peene. This way, you can decide whether your trip should focus mainly on cultural visits or on activities on the water. It is best to check specific event dates and the route of any planned walking trail in advance.

Castle History and Concert Culture

With the exception of the years 1945 to 1989, the Lelkendorf estate has been the family seat of the von Levetzow family since 1225. The concert venues also reflect different aspects of cultural history: at Kulturgut Lelkendorf, the former KFL hall was converted into a concert hall; Lelkendorf Castle has a historic hall that is used for concerts.

Kulturgut Lelkendorf offers a year-round cultural program. If you are planning to attend a particular concert or other event, check the dates in advance. The Kulturgut also has a guest studio with a holiday apartment for artists at work.

Groß Markow Village Church: Architecture, Windows and Organ

Groß Markow Village Church was built in 1840 from red brick in the Neo-Gothic style. Its stained-glass windows date from 1890, and the organ was built by Friedrich Wilhelm Winzer in 1865. These dates place the different elements in context: the church building came first, the organ followed 25 years later, and the windows were created later still. This offers a more nuanced view of the building’s history and furnishings, rather than reducing the church to a single construction date.

Peene Floodplains and Canoeing

From Lelkendorf, you can reach the Peene floodplains via the Peeneweg. There are opportunities to observe cranes, eagles, beavers, otters and other wildlife there. Lelkendorf is also considered a starting point for canoeists on the Peene. For a broader sense of direction, the Peene is navigable from Neukalen to the Baltic Sea.

These offer two different ways to experience nature: the Peeneweg takes you into the floodplains, while canoe trips put the Peene itself at the center. If you are planning a section of the water route or the regional castle trail, check its length and route before your trip. Lelkendorf Castle is one of the castles highlighted along the trail.

Holiday Apartments and Castle Grounds

Lelkendorf Castle offers two holiday apartments for visitors who want to experience the castle. This is separate from the guest studio with a holiday apartment at Kulturgut Lelkendorf, which is intended for artists at work.

The castle grounds include a sauna and a park with a fire pit, stone oven and old trees. Together with the historic hall, the castle offers a range of ways to spend your stay, with culture and time outdoors both playing a part. Which focus is right for you depends on whether you want to include cultural offerings, the Peene floodplains or canoeing in your plans.
