A bell cast in Wismar and a cycling tour through Warnow reveal different sides of the town. The church is considered worth seeing; its cemetery lies in the middle of the village on a small hill.
Church and Cemetery
At the northwestern corner of the cemetery stands an old chapel building, erected in 1855 as the hereditary burial place of the Schlockow estate. The church’s surviving bell was cast in Wismar and consecrated for Reformation Day in 1852. If you would like to visit the church, contact Paul-Friedrich Wöhlcke, Schmiedestraße 76, 18249 Warnow, for the key.
The cemetery is home to the grave of hereditary leaseholder Markus Dokrn, who died in 1896, surrounded by a wrought-iron fence. Historic gravestones commemorate people who died in Schreckenstein in the Sudetenland; these people presumably came to Warnow as expellees. Warnow was first mentioned in a document on 17 June 1261. The town’s history thus extends from its first recorded mention in the Middle Ages to architectural and personal records from the 19th century.
Cycling Route, Whitewater and Landscape
The whitewater course at a fish ladder is located in Eickhof, a district of the municipality of Warnow. Small rapids demand skill and courage from canoeists. The municipality of Warnow lies on the edge of the Warnow-Mildenitz Breakthrough Valley nature reserve.
The approximately 22-kilometre cycling tour from Sternberg to Bützow passes through Warnow. Bear in mind the approximate route length and check the surface and signage before setting off, as these conditions may change. On the way from Eickhof to Warnow, enjoy sweeping views across the Warnow floodplain, with peat-cutting ponds in the fen, reed beds, grassland and wild strips of riparian woodland along the river.
Different factors matter when choosing between cycling and canoeing: on the cycling tour, you can plan for the approximate distance; the route at the fish ladder calls for skill and courage.
More Nature Experiences in the Wider Rostock Destination
In the wider Rostock destination, Sternberger Seenland Nature Park—with its deeply incised breakthrough valleys along the Warnow, numerous lakes, picturesque hills and extensive forests—is especially inviting for hiking and cycling.
