Bützow offers several distinct ways to explore the city’s history: Brick Gothic architecture, buildings from different centuries and a miniature town with historical replicas. There are also seasonal boat trips on the Warnow and round tours in the region, some of which start in Bützow. When planning, it is worth considering the city’s attractions and seasonal activities separately.
Brick Gothic architecture and Bützow’s architectural history
The collegiate church dates from the 13th century and is the oldest building in the city. It is a three-aisled hall church in the Brick Gothic style, a monument of national importance and part of the European Route of Brick Gothic. The church’s architectural form, date of origin and significance to this route give it several historical associations that can be considered together.
The Crooked House is one of the oldest buildings in Bützow. It was built in the 15th century as part of the episcopal castle complex. The town hall makes a different architectural statement: it was built in the Tudor Gothic style and stands right on the market square in the old town. In front of the town hall, the Goose Fountain commemorates the Goose War, a small revolution by Bützow’s citizens against the magistrate’s decree banning geese from roaming freely in the city. Here, the city’s architectural history meets a local tradition.
The watermill is also one of the city’s notable historic buildings. It is a monument to 19th-century industrial architecture. The surviving complex stands to the left of Bützow harbour, right on the Warnow; the mill building and one of its two waterwheels have been preserved. The mill thus complements the medieval and civic architectural styles with an example of industrial architecture.
The miniature town and seasonal boat trips on the Warnow
Bützow’s miniature town is set in a three-hectare park. Around 145 historic buildings from 1850 to 1900 have been faithfully recreated there at a scale of 1:10. A workshop tour shows how the fine details of the replicas are reconstructed; check before your trip whether such a visit is available on your dates. The park also includes a wetland habitat, sculptures and an adventure playground. As individual features of the park may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit.
From May to September, the electric motor vessel “Warnowlöper” is available for boat trips between Bützow and Schwaan. A section of the Warnow along this route is designated as the “Warnow Valley with Small Tributaries” FFH site and is open to low-impact tourism. If the boat trip is an important part of your visit, plan your dates within the stated season and check the current sailing schedule in advance.
For a different way to explore, the Bützow region offers mainly circular tours, some of which start in Bützow. Check the conditions on the relevant routes before setting off. The Bützow Civic and Tourist Office arranges guided tours of the historic old town and excursions into the region, boat trips on the Warnow, visits to the miniature town, and boat and bicycle rentals. These are booking services; you should confirm individual arrangements in advance.
Getting around and planning your stay
Bützow’s sights are easy to explore on foot from the lively city centre. At the old Bützow harbour in the city centre, there is free parking with no time limit, as well as two additional bus parking spaces. Parking conditions may change, so check them again before you arrive.
The city’s history, miniature town, guided activities and round tours in the region offer further possible areas of focus. Shape your plans around the activities that matter to you, and confirm any individually arranged services in advance.
