Steffenshagen is a quiet inland alternative to the Baltic Sea resorts. This green village is characterized by nearby meadows, pastures and forests. The hills around Steffenshagen offer views towards the Baltic Sea. The rural landscape and coastal views thus provide contrasting highlights. When choosing where to stay, a simple question can help: Are you particularly interested in the village church and historic craftsmanship, or would you rather focus on the landscape and nature?

Landscape and Nature

Niedersteffenshagen is described as a suitable destination for nature lovers and hikers. The KĂĽhlung landscape around the village encompasses hills and valleys, deciduous and mixed forests, and small streams. This connection with nature is a distinct theme alongside the cultural attractions in Steffenshagen, where the village church, mill and demonstrations take center stage.

A Regional Perspective on Rostock

In the wider destination of Rostock, the Mecklenburg Baltic Sea Coast is one of the district of Rostock’s main tourist regions. The Rostock region is bordered by 62 kilometers of Baltic Sea coastline, with a number of seaside resorts. The historic Molli narrow-gauge railway runs between Kühlungsborn and Bad Doberan and is the oldest narrow-gauge railway on the Baltic Sea coast. This regional coastal and railway perspective contrasts with Steffenshagen’s quiet inland character.

Village Church and History

Steffenshagen’s village church is considered one of the largest and most impressive village churches in Mecklenburg. It was founded by monks from the Cistercian monastery in Althof-Doberan. Its first organ was installed in 1901; it was built by court organ maker Marcus Runge. The carved altar is said to have been created between 1450 and 1500 in an artist’s workshop in Rostock. These milestones span the period from the monastery’s founding and the altar’s presumed origins to the organ’s construction in the early 20th century.

Crafts and Visits

At the old bakehouse on Thielke’s heritage farm, visitors can see how bread is baked. Traditional blacksmithing techniques are demonstrated at Bernd Thielke’s forge. Guided tours are available at the museum forge in Steffenshagen. The post mill is open to visitors. It was moved from Buschkuhnsdorf in Saxony-Anhalt to Steffenshagen in 1998 and is also one of the attractions along the Kühlung cycling route. Before your visit, check the mill’s current opening arrangements and ask about suitable dates for a possible guided tour.

You can watch Christoph Ohse shape vessels on the potter’s wheel. The grounds of the farm associated with Wilhelmsburg are home to a studio and exhibition gallery created by the painter and graphic artist Herbert Malchow. The crafts offer different points of interest: breadmaking at the bakehouse, traditional techniques at the forge and vessel shaping with Christoph Ohse. You can choose according to the type of craft that interests you most.
