Rieps can be explored through its village history and layout. The village was first mentioned in 1158, when it was recorded as “Zlawt palus Ripze”. For travellers interested in historic settlement patterns, this makes more than an early date tangible: the division of the village also offers a concrete trace of its history.

A village layout with two forms

The southern part of Rieps is laid out in a linear form, while the northern half is arranged around a semicircular village green. Remains of a water-filled moat that belonged to a former fortified residence have also been preserved at the northern edge. The village green and moat offer different insights into the history of the place: one defines the settlement pattern described here, while the other points to the fortified residence of the past.

Village scenes in Wendorf and Cronskamp

Wendorf is a Rundling, a circular village with three entrances. In the historic part, preserved farmsteads are grouped around a village green and a pond. This connects the term Rundling with a concrete village scene; the three entrances are another feature of this settlement form. Wendorf can be explored along numerous cycling and hiking trails. The nearby remains of an old knight’s castle in Schlagsülsdorf are also recommended as a destination.

Cronskamp was also historically a Rundling; small houses and an idyllic pond characterise the village scene there. The farmsteads in Wendorf’s historic part have been preserved.

Landscape and regional setting

A historical description of the surrounding area mentions extensive wetlands and open water around the settlement. This should be distinguished from its geographical setting within the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve: Rieps lies wholly or partly within the reserve. Its maintenance zones include lakes, wetlands, broadleaf forests and moors. The biosphere reserve is considered important for peaceful nature-based recreation, environmental education and sustainable tourism.

In the wider travel destination of Northwest Mecklenburg, the district encompasses the “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay” in the north and the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin” in the south. Terminal moraine ridges, gently undulating ground moraine plateaus, steep and flat coastal sections, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains shape the landscape of Northwest Mecklenburg. The landscape of Northwest Mecklenburg adds a regional perspective to Rieps’ village scenes.

Getting here, orientation and accommodation

Rieps can be reached via the L02, B104 and A20, as well as via the B104 and L01. The monastery town of Rehna is about 15 km away. As a separate hiking context, the Klosterdreieck (Monastery Triangle) includes Rehna, Zarrentin, Ratzeburg, Schlagsdorf and Dechow as stages. For orientation, the distance to Rehna, the roads listed and the hiking trail stages are therefore separate pieces of information.

For Alte Schule Rieps, the partner brochure for the 2025 edition lists two holiday apartments with open-plan kitchens and living areas, gardens and terraces. The apartments are described as suitable for families with children. Check availability separately before booking.
