Röbel/Müritz is situated on a branch of the Müritz. Together with the long waterfront promenade and its landing stages for passenger boats, this gives the town a strong connection to the water. At the same time, churches, the restored Dutch windmill and exhibitions on the town’s history shape what it has to offer. When choosing a destination, you can consider its connection to the water and its cultural history as two distinct focal points.
Water and the town’s location
There are landing stages for passenger boats along the waterfront promenade. Röbel/Müritz also has a waterway stopover, as well as a sailing harbour and a town harbour. These named facilities give the waterfront different points of interest. Inland, the town is nestled in gently rolling countryside—a further characteristic feature of its location, alongside the branch of the Müritz and the harbour facilities.
Churches, the windmill and town history
The restored Dutch windmill stands on Burgberg in the centre of Röbel/Müritz and offers lovely views over the town. The tower of St Mary’s Church offers a different vantage point: climbing it gives you an unobstructed view of the surrounding countryside. This makes it easy to take into account the difference between the town view from the windmill and the countryside view from the church tower when planning your visit.
St Mary’s Church is one of the oldest brick buildings in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It stands on the former temple hill of the Slavic Müritz people and features a Romanesque-Gothic transitional style. The first extensions to the church nave, which originally had two bays, were made in the 14th century. Construction of the early Gothic St Nicholas’ Church is thought to have begun around 1250; today, its intact form is unique in northern Germany.
For visitors, St Nicholas’ Church is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from 5 May to 30 September; short-notice changes are possible. Check the opening information again before travelling. The former synagogue is another notable historic site: it is one of the few surviving half-timbered synagogues in Mecklenburg and houses an exhibition on the Jewish history of Mecklenburg.
Museum, exhibitions and relaxation
At the Haus des Gastes, the local history museum “Heimatstuben” offers free information about the development of Röbel/Müritz. Its themes include traditional crafts, urban development, legal disputes and witch trials. The Haus des Gastes also hosts changing exhibitions of regionally influenced art and regional artists throughout the year; the specific selection varies.
The MüritzTherme adds another focal point. Covering 3,000 m², it offers daily relaxation by, in and with the water. The sauna area includes a 95-degree Finnish outdoor sauna, an 85-degree sauna, a 75-degree salt sauna, a 55-degree sanarium, an infrared cabin, two relaxation rooms and a bar of its own. This description therefore covers both water-based facilities and various types of sauna; individual facilities may change.
