Village History and Park in Möllenbeck

Möllenbeck was first mentioned in 1394 as a green-village settlement with a church. At the same time, the village is increasingly developing into a linear village. The historical mention and the change in settlement form thus offer different perspectives on Möllenbeck. A green-village settlement is one whose houses are arranged around a central village green; a linear village extends along a road. The village green is a central open space.

The park behind Möllenbeck Manor is a listed site. Its tree population includes a ginkgo and a sessile oak about 250 years old. The protected grounds and the specifically named trees offer two different points of reference: the park as a whole and individual elements within it.

The Lake as a Defining Feature of the Village

The elongated Möllenbeck Lake, covering an area of 28.6 hectares, lies on the eastern edge of the village. The lake and park have different defining features: the lake is characterized by its location, shape and area, while the park is defined by its listed status and the named trees. Together, the lake, park and village history shape Möllenbeck’s local character.

Nature Experiences in the Mecklenburg Lake District

The wider travel destination of the Mecklenburg Lake District offers further nature and landscape experiences. Müritz National Park is part of the Mecklenburg Lake District and is characterized by forests, bogs, lakes and expansive meadows.

The Müritz National Park Hiking Trail explores the park’s landscape types and distinctive features in nine stages. It passes lakes, winds through ancient forests, goes by inland dunes and leads to the source of the Havel. Its stages make the trail a separate option for anyone wanting to discover different types of landscape along a single route.

Certified nature and landscape guides offer educational tours through Müritz National Park. These include guided walks in the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest of Serrahn and tours from the water. In addition to the staged hiking route, visitors can therefore choose guided insights into the forest and waterways.

The Damerower Werder bison reserve is located on a peninsula in Lake Kölpin, in the Mecklenburg Lake District and in Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park. Visitors can observe animals there. A forest discovery trail complements animal watching with climbing opportunities, an anthill house, an exhibition featuring touch-and-see panels, and a dendrophone. Here, animal watching is combined with various discovery-trail stations.

Another way to explore the region’s landscape is by water: From Neustrelitz town harbour, waterway travellers can explore Müritz National Park and the Strelitz Small Lake District via the Upper Havel Waterway. The regional options thus differ in the kind of nature experience they offer: a staged hike, a guided tour, animal watching with a discovery trail, or travelling by water. As a cultural highlight in the wider travel destination of the Mecklenburg Lake District, the Rechlin Aviation Technology Museum in Rechlin Nord is another option for visitors interested in culture.
