Kobrow offers two distinct attractions: the Mecklenburg Carriage Museum in Kobrow II is dedicated to historic vehicles, while Tour 4 around Kobrow offers views of Hofsee and Schönfelder See. You can choose between cultural history and a route featuring lakes and nature. To plan your visit, first decide whether the museum or time spent on Tour 4 should be the main focus.

The Mecklenburg Carriage Museum

The Mecklenburg Carriage Museum in Kobrow II houses more than 200 carriages, horse-drawn vehicles and sledges, and is one of the largest and most important carriage collections in Germany. The collection also includes children’s carriages, as well as commercial and military vehicles. The exhibits date from 1820 to 1950. Spanning more than a century, the collection brings together different types of vehicles within a clear historical context and gives your museum visit a distinct thematic focus. The museum is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Opening hours may change seasonally, so check them before your visit. Museum guides lead tours of the exhibition by prior arrangement.

Tour 4: Lakes and Waterbirds

Tour 4 runs around Kobrow and offers views of Hofsee and Schönfelder See. Kobrow is located by Hofsee, which is also among the sights along the tour; the second viewpoint is Schönfelder See. Shortly before the southern shore, a narrow path leads to a bathing spot with benches and a jetty. The bathing spot on Tour 4 is an ideal place to observe a variety of waterbirds. This gives the route a different focus from the museum: here, the emphasis is on the landscape and birdwatching.

More highlights in the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim destination

The wider Ludwigslust-Parchim destination offers additional cultural and natural attractions. Ludwigslust Palace was the former residence of the dukes of Mecklenburg. Together with its park and the town, it forms an ensemble known as the “Little Versailles of the North.” The almost entirely preserved late Baroque town layout includes a former court church and an English-style landscaped park. The palace showcases art and courtly living culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries.

The museum in Dömitz Fortress covers the history of the fortress and town, as well as the history of the Elbe, harbour and bridges; Fritz Reuter and special and art exhibitions are also among its topics. The citadel is a Renaissance fortress modelled on Italian examples, with a pentagonal layout, bastions, casemates and a drawbridge. Special exhibitions may change.

At Zarrentin Monastery, guided tours cover the history of the former Cistercian convent, the lives of the nuns and the building’s architecture. The ground floor also houses a permanent exhibition about the monastery. Dates and access arrangements may change; check visiting arrangements in advance. The limestone fen near Zarrentin is another natural highlight and forms part of the Schaalelauf Nature Reserve. Visitors can explore the fen from the nature trail.
