Almost two metres thick, the walls are a distinctive feature of the village church in Hohen Pritz. The municipality also offers lakes, places to swim and water sports. These are different focal points for planning a trip: the church is in Hohen Pritz, while swimming spots and camping facilities can be found in Kukuk and Klein Pritz, among other places.
Village Church: Building Phases and Music
The village church is a rectangular fieldstone building dating from the mid-13th century. The west tower was added in 1515, meaning the main structure and tower belong to two different building phases. The walls, almost two metres thick, are another tangible architectural feature. The combination of the medieval main building and the tower added later makes the building’s development over time clear.
The “Music in Ancient Walls” concert series was held at the church again in 2024. If a concert is the deciding factor for your visit, check the programme for your preferred dates.
Lakes, Swimming Spots and Countryside in the Municipality
The municipality of Hohen Pritz includes meadows, fields, forests and lakes. Klein Pritzer See lies on the southern edge of the Sternberg Lake District Nature Park. The nature park is also one of the protected areas in the district of Ludwigslust-Parchim. The lakes in the municipality offer numerous water sports opportunities.
The lakes have helped develop the municipality’s villages of Kukuk and Klein Pritz as tourist destinations; campsites and excellent swimming spots attract visitors there every year. A tourism description from 2025 places the swimming area at Klein Pritzer See at the campsite in Kukuk. Check the latest bathing notices before swimming.
On 7 September 2026, the state bathing water register listed the swimming areas at Klein Pritzer See in Klein Pritz and Kukuk as having excellent water quality. This rating refers to the register as of the date stated; current notices are important for the specific day you plan to swim.
Getting There by Bus
VLP bus route 186 runs from Sternberg via Stieten and Wamckow to Hohen Pritz and Kukuk, and back. Check the current timetable for your journey, as times may change.
More Cultural Highlights in the Wider Ludwigslust-Parchim Destination
Ludwigslust Palace was the former residence of the Mecklenburg dukes. Together with its park and town, it forms an ensemble known as the “Little Versailles of the North”. The palace is the centrepiece of an almost completely preserved late Baroque townscape, with a former court church and an English-style landscaped park. The palace presents art and courtly domestic culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries.
At Dömitz Fortress, the museum explores the history of the fortress and town, as well as the history of the Elbe, the harbour and the bridges. Fritz Reuter and special and art exhibitions are also among its topics. This offers a different cultural focus from the courtly domestic culture at Ludwigslust Palace.
At Zarrentin Monastery, guided tours cover the history of the former Cistercian nunnery, the lives of the nuns and the building’s architecture. There is also a permanent exhibition about the monastery on the ground floor. If you are planning a visit, check dates and access in advance.
