On Lake Schwerin’s outer shore, Dobin am See combines waterside recreation with local history and storytelling. When planning your trip, consider whether lakes and swimming or historical topics should be the main focus: both are represented in the municipality, but with different specific points of interest.

Water, Choosing Where to Stay and Accommodation

Dobin am See lies on Lake Schwerin’s outer shore. The municipality has numerous lakes that can be used for water sports and fishing. These two activities offer different experiences, but share the lakes as their common setting. Retgendorf and Flessenow each offer opportunities for recreation on Lake Schwerin’s outer shore; both villages have natural swimming meadows and bathing coves. When planning, you can choose between the swimming areas in these two villages and the municipality-wide selection of numerous lakes for water sports and fishing.

The wide range of holiday options on Lake Schwerin includes campsites, beaches, hotels and guesthouses.

Castle, Church and Village History

The site of the old Dobin Castle is now part of the municipality of Dobin am See, which takes its name from the castle. The castle is associated with the battles of 1147 between the Christian forces of Henry the Lion, Danish troops and the still-pagan Obotrites under Prince Niklot.

Retgendorf village church is a Gothic brick church with a carved triptych altarpiece. The Buchholz Village Museum offers insights into everyday life and the history of the region, from the earliest settlement to the present day. Thus, a clearly defined building and a long regional timeline offer two distinct cultural topics. When choosing a cultural focus, there is a difference: the castle is associated with the battles of 1147, while the museum covers topics from the earliest settlement to the present day.

Legends and Trails

In March 2024, the municipality described the Blue Eight route as a way to explore local legends by bike or on foot. In Retgendorf, at the starting point of the Niklot Trail, there is a legend plaque on the theme “The Castle in the Lake” beside a legend stone. The ways of exploring are therefore different: the Blue Eight combines local legends with physical activity, while the plaque at the Niklot Trail names a single motif.

Cultural Context in Ludwigslust-Parchim

Within the Ludwigslust-Parchim destination, Ludwigslust Palace is a cultural and historical highlight in its own right. It was the former residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg and forms an ensemble with the park and town known as the “Little Versailles of the North.” The palace is also the centerpiece of an almost completely preserved late-Baroque townscape, with a former court church and an English-style landscape park. The palace presents art and courtly domestic culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries.
