Warlow is best explored through the connection between local history and cycling. Linden Avenue shapes the village landscape and is associated with the local poet Richard Giese; a signposted cycling route passes through the village. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing Warlow’s own sights from other cultural attractions in the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim destination.

Richard Giese and Linden Avenue

Richard Giese, who later became a teacher and local poet, was born in Warlow on 2 February 1890. The house where he lived in the village is still standing today. His birthplace and a memorial stone are at Linden Avenue 46. The memorial stone was erected on Richard Giese’s property in Warlow on 27 March 1994. His birthplace, home and memorial are thus linked to a specific place in the village.

Linden Avenue is a cobbled street with a summer path. It is considered a landmark of the Angerdorf village of Warlow; wide streets and majestic lime trees also shape the village landscape. The cemetery chapel is another part of the village’s built heritage. The Jante Village Studio is also located at Linden Avenue 46.

The local cultural scene includes an ensemble comprising a historic stone oven, a bakehouse and a draw well. It was established at the initiative of the Warlower Plattdeutschclub Richard Giese e.V. and serves as a meeting place for club celebrations. Alongside the memorial to Giese, this shared community space and its architectural features are part of Warlow’s cultural character.

Cycling around Warlow

The Bog Iron Ore Villages Tour passes through Warlow and mostly follows flat, level terrain. The paths are generally easy to cycle; only a few sections use roads open to traffic. The route is signposted throughout with the “Blue TOUR” symbol. As local conditions can change, it is advisable to check the latest route information before setting off.

Another option is the Great Bog Iron Ore Detour, which also passes through Warlow. It is suitable as a section for cycling holidaymakers who want to explore Mecklenburg. A cycle path also runs along County Road 34 from the edge of Warlow to Federal Highway 5. Check the current route and condition of the paths before setting off.

The River Rögnitz flows near Warlow, but not through the village itself. It can be reached via paved roads that are also popular with cyclists. This makes it possible to distinguish the surrounding landscape from the routes that pass through Warlow.

Culture in the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim destination

In the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim destination, Ludwigslust Palace offers its own cultural and historical highlight. It was the former residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg. Together with its park and town, it forms an ensemble known as the “Little Versailles of the North.” Ludwigslust Palace is also the focal point of an almost completely preserved late Baroque town complex, with a former court church and an English-style landscaped park. The palace presents art and courtly domestic culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Another highlight is Dömitz Citadel, a Renaissance fortress laid out on the Italian model in the shape of a pentagon, with bastions, casemates and a drawbridge. The museum in the fortress covers the history of the fortress and town, the history of the Elbe, harbour and bridges, and Fritz Reuter; temporary and art exhibitions are also among the museum’s themes.
