Pätow-Steegen was first mentioned in 1194. For planning your trip, there are cycling routes through Steegen as well as natural and cultural attractions in the surrounding area. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can plan your stay around outdoor activities, landscapes, local history or regional produce.
Cycling routes and historic stops
The Hagenow Countryside Tour is a cycling route through the Hagenow area. It begins and ends in Hagenow and passes through Steegen. One described section crosses the fields to Warlitz Church and continues to the smallholdings in Steegen. The Countryside Tour is 32 kilometres long; the Hagenow Church Tour covers 50 kilometres. This makes it possible to compare the two routes by their stated distances. The difference is 18 kilometres.
Warlitz Church is part of the Religious Buildings Cycling Route. The two Discovery Routes connect religious sites with information about local history and agricultural land use; audio texts and images at the stops provide additional content.
Bekow: Explore the landscape on foot
Bekow is a nature conservation area covering more than 600 hectares. Its landscape features include bogs, ponds, mixed woodland, wet meadows and basins left by former clay extraction. Hiking trails provide access to the area. The 2.5-kilometre Pilzy Nature Experience Trail combines nature with art and interactive activities. Another signposted walk explores landforms, animals and plants with the help of an audio guide or the Discovery Routes app. These offer different themes and ways of presenting information.
Culture in Hagenow
The Museum of Everyday Culture in Hagenow presents its permanent exhibition in a rural town house dating from 1828 and in historic outbuildings. Its subject matter ranges from regional history and traditional crafts to technology and industrialisation. The synagogue complex comprises the main building, a coach house and the old schoolhouse, and serves as a venue for cultural events.
Apple orchards and distillery
Gut Schwechow is located in the Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve, surrounded by extensive apple orchards. Fruit brandies are available there; the farm shop stocks regional products, though its selection may change. Tours with tastings can be booked at the Schwechow Distillery. The introduction to the production process lasts about one hour. Check availability before your trip.
Another cultural highlight in Ludwigslust-Parchim
In the wider destination of Ludwigslust-Parchim, Ludwigslust Palace is a distinctive cultural and historical highlight. It was the former residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg; the palace, park and town form an ensemble described as the “Little Versailles of the North.” The palace is also the centrepiece of an almost completely preserved late Baroque town layout, with a former court church and an English-style landscape park. Inside the palace, visitors can learn about art and courtly domestic culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries.
