The swimming area on Lake Passow, two circular routes starting in Passow and the murals in the castle offer different ways to explore Passow: water, activity in the countryside and architecture. You can choose a route based on the activity and distance you prefer; if you want to include swimming lessons, check the dates before you travel.

Swimming Area on Lake Passow

You can reach the swimming area on Lake Passow from Passow by following the signs in the village. Signage may change, so check it before you travel. The swimming area has a jetty, toilets, a partially shaded sunbathing lawn and a playground. As facilities may change, check before your visit if the amenities important to you are available. Swimming lessons are offered at the swimming area; check in advance whether the course you want is available during your travel dates.

Cycling Routes Starting in Passow

Two circular cycling routes of different lengths start in Passow. Route 2 is about 15 kilometres long and goes via Weisin, the Bobzin lock and Lübz before returning to Passow. Along the way, it passes the beach and runs through the Alte Elde nature reserve towards Weisin. At about 26 kilometres, Route 1 is longer and goes via Charlottenhof, Zahren, Kressin, Daschow, Kuppentin and Weisin before returning to Passow. A well-maintained cycle path runs along the Elde-Müritz waterway on Route 1. Route 2 is the shorter of the two cycling routes.

On Foot by Lake Passow and in the Alte Elde

If you would rather explore on foot, the Alte Elde nature reserve is also a good place for a walk. The circular walking trail around Lake Passow takes about 60 minutes. Compared with the two cycling loops, the lakeside route therefore gives you a specific time estimate, while the cycling options differ in distance. This lets you plan by choosing between an approximate walking time and circular routes of different lengths.

Passow Castle: Palladianism and Pompeii

Passow Castle’s architecture is another highlight. The castle was built in the Palladian style, an artistic movement shaped by Palladio and inspired by the rediscovery of Roman villas. The upper floor features murals based on designs from the Villa of the Vettii in Pompeii. The dome is painted with allegorical motifs from the animal and plant worlds of different Pompeian periods. The architecture and decoration thus draw on different aspects of ancient villa culture: the architectural model shaped by Palladio and the Pompeian imagery.

Culture in the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim destination

In the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim destination, Ludwigslust Palace is another cultural and historical landmark. It was the former residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg and, together with its park and the town, forms an ensemble known as the “Little Versailles of the North.” Alongside the art at Passow Castle, the destination of Ludwigslust-Parchim therefore also offers the history of a ducal residence and an ensemble of palace, park and town as distinct cultural and historical themes.

If you are considering Passow as a place to stay, think about whether the swimming area, a cycling route, the lakeside walk or the castle art matters most for your trip. With about 60 minutes for the circular walking trail and cycling routes of about 15 or 26 kilometres, you can plan your activities to suit your preferred time and distance.
