Siggelkow can be explored through two specific themes: striking church buildings and bodies of water, each of which has its own distinct character. When planning, it is worth considering the lakes individually: they differ in their conservation status, natural features and history of use. Together with the information about the Müritz-Elde Waterway, they provide clear points of reference across architecture, landscape and waterways.

Churches with Different Architectural Styles

The village church in Siggelkow is a half-timbered building with a post-and-beam structure and a simple rectangular floor plan. On its western side is the boarded bell tower, built in 1796. The church is also notable for its patterned decorative stonework. Its construction method, floor plan, tower and stonework are specific features to look for when viewing the building.

The churches in Groß Pankow and Klein Pankow also belong to the municipality of Siggelkow. Both were built as half-timbered structures around 1700. In Redlin, the monumental church was built in the Brandenburg style in 1876. These construction details distinguish the locations: the post-and-beam structure and rectangular floor plan in Siggelkow, the half-timbered buildings dating to around 1700 in the two Pankow villages, and the church in the Brandenburg style in Redlin. If you choose church architecture as your focus, construction style and date of origin take centre stage, rather than the village churches appearing as identical stops.

Lakes, Conservation and Natural Features

Lake Sabel is about 3 km south of Siggelkow. It is not a swimming lake and has been a protected nature reserve since October 1939. From May to November, it offers unspoilt nature with rare fauna and flora. The seasonal information and the explicit note that the lake is not for swimming are part of what makes it distinctive.

Lake Sand is 1 km southeast of Groß Pankow. This 5.08-hectare natural monument is rich in nutrients; adjacent areas of fen, lush vegetation, and bird, dragonfly and fish life are among its natural features. At Lake Sabel, the focus is on its conservation status and seasonal natural character; at Lake Sand, it is on the fen areas and the diversity of the fauna mentioned. Lake Treptow is also nearby: it covers 65 hectares and is 4 to 5 m deep. At 26 hectares, Lake Blank is smaller.

Lake Blank and the Müritz-Elde Waterway

Until shortly after German reunification, Lake Blank was a popular local recreation area, and it remains a popular destination for anglers. The Niedermühle nature reserve borders its northern shore; the Gehlsbach, which flows in from the east, runs through it. There is also a clear historical context for boating: in the former Marnitz administrative district, Lake Blank was the only lake on which boats were permitted. Fishing, the nature reserve and this former boating rule are different aspects of the same body of water.

Another connection to the waterways can be found in Neuburg, which belongs to the municipality of Siggelkow: the Müritz-Elde Waterway passes through the village. The Neuburg boating rest area and campsite is located at kilometre 82.1 of the waterway. The kilometre marker pinpoints the site directly on the waterway and adds a separate waterside point of reference to the lakes.

A Distinctive Cultural Highlight in the Wider Ludwigslust-Parchim Destination

Beyond Siggelkow, the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim destination offers a cultural and historical highlight of its own in Ludwigslust Palace. The palace was the former residence of the dukes of Mecklenburg and, together with its park and town, forms an ensemble known as the “Little Versailles of the North.” It is the centrepiece of an almost completely preserved late Baroque town complex, with a former court church and an English-style landscape park. The palace presents art and courtly domestic culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries. While the churches in Siggelkow bring individual village church buildings into focus, Ludwigslust Palace brings together a residence, town complex and park in a regional ensemble.
