Malliß is located in the Wanzeberg hills and an extensive forest area. Here, a protected landscape meets a strong mining heritage, along with industrial heritage routes, water activities and a regional farm shop. When choosing how to spend your stay, you can focus on different things: nature and geology, the traces of lignite mining, or activities on the water and fruit growing.
Landscape and Nature on the Wanzeberg
The Wanzeberg area around Malliß is designated a landscape conservation area. The landscape is notable for its diverse flora and fauna as well as geological features. Alongside the industrial heritage, it offers a distinct natural history focus. If you are particularly interested in landscape and geology, you will find a different thematic perspective here than at the mining history sites.
Mining History and the Marienstollen
The Friedrich-Franz mine introduced underground lignite mining to Malliß. Mining shaped the region until 1960. The restored entrance to the Marienstollen is a mining history monument and is considered unique in Mecklenburg. Decorative elements recovered when the entrance was cleared are on display at the Regional Museum in Kaliß; they add tangible exhibits to the story of the Marienstollen.
Compare the Industrial Heritage Routes
The southern Malliß industrial heritage loop leads to the entrances of the Conow I and Marien-Stollen adits, the Kreuzkanal and the former Malliß railway station. The northern loop returns to Malliß via the church in Conow and the brine well. The routes therefore differ in their stops: the southern loop focuses on traces of mining and former transport infrastructure, while the northern loop also includes a church and brine well. If you are choosing one of these routes as the main reason for your visit, check the latest route descriptions before setting out, as route details may change. You can reach the industrial heritage routes by car via Ludwigsluster Straße 11 in Malliß.
Water and a Stay by the Canal
A campsite in Malliß is located beside the Ziegeleikanal on the Elde-Müritz Waterway. Water activities in Malliß include pedal boats, rowing or motorboats, and stand-up paddleboarding. The tourism area also offers boating and fishing on or along the Elde-Müritz Waterway. These options offer different ways to enjoy the water; they are separate from the stops on the industrial heritage routes.
Fruit Growing and Regional Products
Danis Saftladen is an organically certified fruit farm with a farm shop, mobile cider press, contract pressing service and apiary. The farm shop offers juices, fruit spreads, honey and regional crafts. Its single-variety apple juices include Boskoop and Goldparmäne; the farm’s own honey is also available. The farm’s fruit-growing focus extends from its shop to its pressing services. The range and seasonal availability of products may change. If you are coming for a particular product or pressing service, ask in advance what is currently available.
Another Specific Place to Visit
The Am Wiesengrund campsite in Malliß has a petting zoo with goats, alpacas, ponies and pot-bellied pigs. This makes animals another distinct point of interest alongside the landscape, history and water. Activities and the animals on site may change; if these are important to your plans, check before your visit.
