At Elbe river kilometre 504, Dömitz brings together a striking fortress history, waterways and floodplain landscapes. The town is located in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve River Landscape Elbe. When planning your trip, you can combine historic buildings and museum exhibits with tours on the water or by bike.

Fortress, Museum and Stone Lock

Dömitz Fortress is a pentagonal Renaissance fortress on the Mecklenburg bank of the Elbe. From the “Drache” bastion, you can look across the Elbe to the Dömitz Elbe Bridge and the listed Dömitz Railway Bridge, an industrial monument. The museum at the fortress focuses on the history of the fortress and town, the Elbe, and the history of the harbour and bridges. Its subjects also include Fritz Reuter and special and art exhibitions.

The stone lock is another testament to the town’s history. It was built between 1568 and 1572 and, thanks to later alterations, has retained its original form, including the original brick lock chamber, parts of the mitre gates, and coats of arms and inscription panels. It is considered the oldest brick lock in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. For those interested in architectural history, it offers another striking building alongside the Renaissance fortress, with details that differ from those of the fortress complex.

The former arsenal of the fortress is also home to the exhibition “People and the Biosphere – Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow” at the information centre for the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve River Landscape Elbe M-V. This means the fortress brings together both the history of the town and fortress and topics relating to the biosphere reserve.

The Elbe, Waterways and Water Sports

The navigable Müritz-Elde Waterway begins in Dömitz at kilometre 0.00. It connects the Elbe with the Mecklenburg Lake District. Separate from this are the lock-free trips on the Elbe, which are possible from Dömitz harbour. The two waterways therefore offer different directions to consider when planning a trip.

The largely unspoilt Müritz-Elde Waterway has a gentle current. This makes it suitable for paddlers as well as inexperienced raft and houseboat users. The Dömitz Waterway Hiking Centre includes a marina, Huckleberry’s raft station, canoe hire, pedal boats and stand-up paddleboard hire. Those looking to plan their stay around a specific activity will find a range of water sports options in Dömitz.

Cycling Routes and Nature Nearby

The Elbe Cycle Route, the Mecklenburg Lake District Cycle Route and the international Iron Curtain Trail pass through Dömitz or run through the town. Another route is the Elbetal Star Tour: it leads from Dömitz past the Klein Schmölen inland dune and the Klein Schmölen oxbow lake, before returning to Dömitz. These routes offer different ways to explore the surrounding area by bike.

Nearby, a completed skywalk in the “Nature and Cultural Experience Dömitz Railway Bridge” project offers a view of the floodplain habitats. Guided ranger tours are also available in the area around Dömitz. Both activities complement the historical and water-related attractions with nature experiences, while remaining distinct from the sights inside the fortress.

Getting There and Planning Your Trip

Dömitz can be reached by public transport, car and bicycle. The town no longer has a rail connection, following the closure of the Dömitz–Ludwigslust railway line in 2001. This distinction is important when choosing how to travel: general access by public transport does not mean there is a rail connection.

Dömitz offers several clearly distinct themes to shape your trip around: the history of the fortress and town, the Elbe and the Müritz-Elde Waterway, as well as cycling routes and floodplain landscapes. Which of these takes priority can help determine your choice of activities and the rest of your travel plans.
