Crivitz combines its setting among beech and pine forests with striking traces of the town’s history. From Lake Crivitz, you can enjoy views of the church and the old town. Hiking routes, the arboretum and the town church offer different reasons to explore the area.

Forest, Lake and Trails

Lake Crivitz is a shallow lake used exclusively for fishing. This restriction is important when planning your visit: the lake is not described as a general swimming or water sports destination. By contrast, the Warnow, considered a small, wild stream, invites you to go paddling north of Crivitz. The two bodies of water therefore differ considerably in their intended uses.

The Crivitz Arboretum is a seven-hectare tree park with 132 species of trees and shrubs from around the world. Two nature trails provide more information about around 100 tree species and 30 shrub species. This gives the park a particular appeal for anyone interested in trees and woody plants: the trails offer a focused look at the diversity of species.

Hiking and Cycling

A circular hiking trail goes around Lake Crivitz and through the arboretum. The return leg of the walk around the lake follows the boulder nature trail along the lakeside promenade. Another described route starts at the end of Freiheitsallee in Crivitz: it goes around Lake Militz, along Liebesallee with its old small-leaved lime trees, and on to the village of BĂĽrgerholz. The named starting point and destination make it easy to distinguish this route from the loop around Lake Crivitz.

There are also specific options for cyclists. The “Around Crivitz” cycling tour is 81 kilometres long. On a recommended cycling tour, paved farm tracks alternate with sandy sections; short stretches also run along roads with traffic. Take these road sections into account when planning and check the route conditions before setting off.

Town Church and Local History

Crivitz Town Church was renovated in the Late Gothic style. It is a three-aisled Gothic brick hall church with a 40-metre-high tower. Its origins are believed to date to the late 14th century. Historical wall frescoes date from the time the church was built and from the Renaissance. The different periods are reflected in both the architecture and the frescoes.

A few metres from the market square, on Fritz-Reuter-Straße, is the former synagogue of Crivitz, recognisable by its distinctive architecture. The Crivitz local history museum depicts everyday life in Mecklenburg around 100 years ago through a classroom, living room, kitchen, bakery, hair salon and blacksmith’s workshop. The church, former synagogue and museum offer different perspectives: architecture, the town’s religious history and historic everyday spaces.

Getting There and Planning

Schwerin and Parchim are easily reached from Crivitz by bus and train. If you plan to travel to these cities, check the timetables for your travel date before choosing a connection. Local trails and attractions offer different options for planning activities: you can choose from hikes by Lake Crivitz or Lake Militz, a visit to the arboretum, and exploring the town’s history, according to your interests.
