Barnin lies on the southeastern shore of Lake Barnin. The village combines a range of water-based activities with insights into local architecture and village history. This gives you several options when planning your trip: swimming and canoeing, the church and farmhouses, and the village museum “De Dörpstuw.”

Swimming, Fishing and Canoeing on Lake Barnin

Lake Barnin is an ideal place for fishing and swimming. The outdoor swimming area has a spacious sunbathing lawn and a children’s playground. If you would like to spend time at the beach, you’ll find both features here. Before using the outdoor swimming area, it’s worth checking its current operating conditions.

The lake is also a starting point for canoe trips: there is a canoe launch at the outdoor swimming area. The canoe route runs from Lake Barnin to the point where the Warnow flows out of the lake, then continues along the river. This lets you choose between spending time by the lake and taking a trip on the water. When planning your route, take seasonal water levels and navigability into account.

The Warnow flows through the municipality of Barnin. It is helpful to be precise when finding your way: the canoe route reaches the Warnow’s outflow from Lake Barnin and then follows the river. In other words, it leads from the lake to the Warnow and continues along it.

Village Church, Thatched Roofs and “De Dörpstuw”

Barnin Village Church was consecrated on June 6, 1869. Its design has remained almost unchanged from Krüger’s original plans. Barnin is also home to old farmhouses with thatched roofs. Together, these buildings offer different ways to learn about the village: the church for its traditional design, and the farmhouses for their thatched roofs.

The village museum “De Dörpstuw” offers another glimpse into local history through its collection. Most of the collection consists of loans or donations from residents of Barnin and Hof Barnin. The museum is therefore of interest not only for its collection, but also for the origins of many of its items in these two localities.

Cultural Life and Summer Events

Barnin has a vibrant cultural life, with traditional events. The cultural association and the Hof Barniner Landverein both contribute to it. Numerous events are held in summer on the festival meadow by the beach. This means the lakeshore’s swimming and leisure activities share the seasonal spotlight with local events. If a particular date is the reason for your trip, it’s a good idea to check event dates in advance.

The timing of your visit also depends on whether you want to focus on the swimming area, a canoe trip or a summer event.

Getting Here and Finding Your Way

Barnin has good access to the A14 motorway. If you’re travelling by car, you can take this connection into account when planning; check the best route before setting off. Once you arrive, the lakeshore and the village’s history offer two distinct starting points for choosing activities. You can shape your visit around your interests in the water or in Barnin’s cultural heritage.
