Neuharlingersiel combines a 20-hectare North Sea beach with an indoor seawater pool, seasonal music at the harbor and experiences in the Wadden Sea. The activities focus on different things: the beach, water, seafaring and culture. This lets you weigh up which of these themes you want to focus on during your stay.

Beach and BadeWerk: different ways to enjoy the water

Neuharlingersiel’s North Sea beach covers 20 hectares. BadeWerk Neuharlingersiel has an indoor seawater pool with a water temperature of 31°C and seven themed saunas. BadeWerk also features natural mud that is described as unique and 400 years old. When planning your visit, you can choose between spending time at the beach and focusing on BadeWerk, with its indoor pool, saunas and natural mud.

Mudflat walk, surf lesson or cutter trip

Expert-led mudflat walks through the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site are offered from Neuharlingersiel. Windloop, the kite- and surf school right on the beach, offers a different kind of active experience, including a two-day beginner’s course covering theoretical and practical basics. During the season, cutter trips to see the crabs depart regularly, and passengers can watch seals near their haul-out sites. A walk, a course and a boat trip are different ways to spend time on and in the Wadden Sea. If a cutter trip is an essential part of your plans, check the schedule before travelling.

Harbor concerts and maritime history

During the season, harbor concerts featuring choirs and shanty choirs take place every Sunday in the concert shell at the harbor. If you plan to attend a concert, check the exact dates in advance; program details may change. The Bottle Ship Museum displays around 100 faithfully detailed ship models in bottles. It offers insights into the history of seafaring from 200 BC to the modern nuclear submarine. Neuharlingersiel’s cutters still head out into the North Sea to catch shrimp. The town thus offers cultural insights into seafaring as well as ongoing shrimp fishing as distinct maritime themes.

Forest and mill history in Wittmund

The wider destination of Wittmund offers forest and mill history as additional themes. Wittmund Forest covers more than 700 hectares and has several hiking trails, as well as paths for woodland walks and cycling. It is home to a circular forest bog described as a glacial Pingo remnant, with an observation platform and bench. The PeldemĂĽhle is another historic destination in Wittmund: built in 1741 to hull barley, it comprises a residential building and a barn, and is the oldest single-storey gallery Dutch windmill in northwest Germany. The historic bakehouse at the PeldemĂĽhle demonstrates how grain is processed from flour to bread.

The areas of focus are therefore clearly distinct: Neuharlingersiel offers beaches, mudflats and maritime experiences, while the wider destination of Wittmund adds forest trails and mill history.
