A roughly 1.3-kilometre educational trail, a restored windmill and a cultural centre in a former railway station: Neuenkirchen-Vörden offers several ways to plan a stay that combines moorland scenery with local history. Which you focus on depends on whether you want to explore the outdoors, visit historic buildings or plan a cultural programme.

Experience Moorland and Water

The Campemoor moorland experience trail is about 1.3 kilometres long. Information boards trace the history of the moor, from its formation and peat extraction to renaturation; the trail also introduces typical moorland plants and animals. The route and its themes go hand in hand: when planning, you can consider not only its approximate length but also its subject matter. If you are interested in landscape change, the trail offers a clearly defined insight into different phases of the moor’s history.

The Schwanenteich nature experience offers a different perspective on nature. It features a boardwalk and information boards about the water. The Vörden natural swimming pool offers another focus: its features include a 50-metre swimming lane, a naturally designed diving tower and shallow, gravelled water zones. This means the area offers a range of water and nature themes, from information about the water body to the different areas of the natural swimming pool.

Historic Buildings and Their Stories

Two buildings have different dates: Selings Mill was built in 1824, while the Ackerbürgerhaus dates back to 1843. Selings Mill is a protected gallery windmill and has been extensively restored to its original condition. The Ackerbürgerhaus has also been restored and furnished true to the original. Its attic houses an exhibition of historic everyday objects. Together, the two buildings offer a look at the history of milling and the objects of everyday life.

The Stiftsburg Vörden, a group of historically significant buildings, is another part of the area’s architectural history. If you would like to learn more about another local museum, you can arrange a guided tour of the Schlachtereimuseum in advance. As tours must be arranged, planning ahead is especially worthwhile.

Culture in the Former Railway Station

The Kulturbahnhof Neuenkirchen-Vörden opened in 2006 as the first sociocultural centre in the district of Vechta. It is housed in a carefully renovated former railway station. The programme includes music, film, theatre performances, lectures, discussions and exhibitions. This means you can also add cultural events to your stay rather than focusing solely on nature or historic buildings. If you have a particular evening in mind, check the latest event dates in advance.

Find Your Way on Foot and by Bike

For exploring the municipality and surrounding areas, there is a junction-based route system, signposted hiking trails and a cycle-route guidance system. These options are designed for different interests: you can focus on walks or use the cycle-route signs to plan your own trip. The details of each route will determine which one is right for you.

Regional Additions in the Wider Vechta Destination

The district of Vechta, part of the wider Vechta destination, offers further opportunities for hiking and cycling. It has 31 hiking routes through floodplains and moorland, forests and hills, as well as past historic sights and natural monuments. The routes are marked according to the German Hiking Association’s quality criteria and uniformly signposted. For cyclists, the district network covers about 870 kilometres, with 16 themed cycle routes in addition, including “Discover Noble Estates” and “Art, Culture and Nature”. These routes are part of the district of Vechta and complement the local attractions of Neuenkirchen-Vörden. Routes and signage may be updated; check the latest information before making specific plans.
