If you are looking for a destination in Suhlendorf with a clear cultural theme, follow the trail to the “Auguste” post mill and the crafts museum. Suhlendorf is an idyllic resort in the eastern Lüneburg Heath, near the Elbufer-Drawehn Nature Park. When choosing where to stay, you can combine the history of the mill with the heathland setting; the post mill itself is more than 200 years old.

The “Auguste” Post Mill and Crafts

The “Auguste” post mill was built near Braunschweig in 1810. In the early 1970s, it was dismantled into individual parts, thoroughly restored in Suhlendorf, and rebuilt as the centrepiece of a windmill museum. Its move from its original location to its reconstruction in Suhlendorf is part of its history, as is its age. The sequence of construction, dismantling, restoration and reconstruction gives you a tangible way to explore the mill’s history.

The Suhlendorf Crafts Museum offers guided tours on request and by prior arrangement. You can also arrange a demonstration of the milling process in the “Auguste” post mill. The two options have different focuses: a guided tour explores the museum, while the demonstration centres on the milling process itself. If you plan to attend the demonstration, arrange it with the museum in advance.

Many events at the Crafts Museum bring traditional crafts to life and make them an immersive experience. If you want to plan your stay around an event, check the date in advance. On the outdoor grounds, a path leads through the bee fence to a children’s playground—another useful landmark in the museum area.

Location and finding hotels in Suhlendorf

Suhlendorf is right on the B71 federal highway, a useful landmark for planning your journey. The town is in the eastern Lüneburg Heath, near the Elbufer-Drawehn Nature Park. This makes it possible to choose a destination based on its local cultural and landscape attractions.

Culture in the wider Uelzen destination

The wider Uelzen destination offers other cultural attractions with a different focus. In the town of Uelzen, the Hundertwasser railway station was created as a project for the Expo 2000 world exhibition in Hanover. It is one of the last works by Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser and combines art, ecology and modernity. From the station forecourt, the “Weg der Steine” (Path of Stones) leads into Uelzen town centre; the route includes 21 artistically painted rock sculptures. The station and the art trail each offer distinctive perspectives on architecture and public art.

Another cultural site in the wider Uelzen destination is Ebstorf Monastery. The Ebstorf World Map was probably created around 1300, covers about 13 m² and is considered the largest known medieval map of the world. From 1 April to 31 October, the monastery offers guided tours lasting about 90 minutes, with explanations of the map. The themes are therefore quite different: Suhlendorf focuses on the history of the mill and a possible demonstration of the milling process, while the wider Uelzen destination offers, among other things, architecture, art and medieval world maps.
