Bad Bodenteich brings together water-based activities, trails through the Seewiesen wetlands and the history of the division of Germany. Several activities come together in one place at the lakeside spa park, while trails of varying lengths offer options for walks and Nordic walking. The Museum of German Unity adds a cultural focus of its own. When planning your visit, it is therefore worth considering whether you would like to focus more on exercise, water or contemporary history.
Water and exercise at the lakeside spa park
The lakeside spa park covers 20 hectares, of which 8 hectares are water. Activities offered there include pedal boating and stand-up paddleboarding. Walking trails offer another way to explore the park. This lets you treat water activities and time on the trails as separate focuses without having to compare different locations.
The spa park also offers Kneipp activities: there are foot and arm baths for children and adults, as well as a dew-walking meadow. These provide further opportunities for outdoor exercise alongside the water activities. You can choose which of them to include in your stay according to your interests.
Trails of varying lengths
The Seewiesen nature trail runs along the former lakeshore and through the former lake. It is approximately 8 kilometres long, with a shorter option of around 3.5 kilometres. These figures help you choose a route according to the distance you have in mind. The historic character of the landscape is also part of the context: the trail does not run along a present-day lakeshore, but along the former shore and through the former lake.
Other marked routes start and end at the Bad Bodenteich forest swimming pool. The hiking and Nordic walking routes are 5,350 and 5,600 metres long, respectively. Compared with the shorter Seewiesen option, they fall within a different distance range; the longer Seewiesen trail, in turn, offers a considerably more extensive route. These figures allow for a factual comparison of trail lengths, but do not indicate how long it takes to walk them.
The Vierhundert-Wasser barefoot trail connects the former Bodenteich water castle with the Robin Hood castle in the Seewiesen. Bodenteich Castle also serves as a starting point for hiking, cycling and walking. The different trails and starting points offer several distinct ways to enjoy being active.
Border history and Bodenteich Castle
The Museum of German Unity in Bad Bodenteich has a permanent exhibition on the border, border service, life in both German states and reunification. The collection includes around 700 exhibits; this number may change. The museum is considered the only border museum in the district of Uelzen. This may change if another border museum opens in the district.
The history surrounding Bodenteich Castle also extends beyond its role today as a starting point for trails. Dark, top-fermented beer called Knorrbock was brewed in the brewery opposite from 1634 to 1918. This timeframe clearly places the brewing tradition in the past.
Cycling and the wider Uelzen destination
Cycling around Bad Bodenteich is associated with the Ilmenau Cycle Path, the Hanse-Wendland Cycle Path and the Elbe Side Canal. Together with Bodenteich Castle as a starting point for cycling tours, these offer a further focus alongside local walking trails and paths. The route connections broaden the choice for anyone who does not want to focus their stay solely on walking.
The wider Uelzen destination also offers other cultural attractions, distinct from the local offerings in Bad Bodenteich. In Uelzen, the Hundertwasser Station was created as a project for Expo 2000 in Hanover; it is among the last works by the Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The Ebstorf World Map at Ebstorf Abbey was probably created around 1300, measures approximately 13 square metres and is considered the largest known medieval world map. Both examples broaden the picture of the Uelzen destination without replacing Bad Bodenteich’s local features.
When planning your stay, you can weigh up the themes according to their individual character: the trails vary in length, the spa park combines water-based activities with exercise, and the museum is dedicated to the division of Germany and reunification. If you are looking for a hotel in Bad Bodenteich, considering what you want from your trip can help you connect your search with the activities that interest you most.
