The northern route of the Wümme Cycle Route runs from Bremen-Vegesack to Wilsede, or in the opposite direction, passing through Reeßum along the way.

Herb Region, Mill Route and the Wieste

Reeßum is part of the Wiesteniederung Herb Region. This community initiative includes the municipalities of Horstedt, Reeßum, Sottrum, Mulmshorn, Gyhum, Bötersen, Hassendorf, Hellwege and Ahausen in the district of Rotenburg (Wümme). Agriculture, trade and commerce, the hospitality industry, tourism providers, and landscape and nature conservation organisations work together on this project, run by the Kräuterregion Wiesteniederung e. V. association, to create attractive herb-related offerings.

On the Herb Route, the watermill in Stuckenborstel is the final highlight of the circular tour, after the route passes through Taaken and Reeßum. The mill is beside a millpond fed by the Wieste. For most of its course, the Wieste remains in a near-natural state and is a habitat for numerous fish species, including the rare, European-protected spined loach and the river and brook lamprey.

Cycling Routes and Hiking Trails in the Rotenburg Travel Region

The Wümme Cycle Route in the wider Rotenburg travel region is a circular route of around 250 kilometres that follows the Wümme more or less closely. The northern route is about 125 kilometres long, and the southern route about 135 kilometres. Cross-connections divide the routes into attractive individual sections that are also suitable for day trips and families. The northern route passes through Reeßum; its connection between Bremen-Vegesack and Wilsede thus gives the village a direct link to this larger cycling network. The northern route is therefore around ten kilometres shorter than the southern route.

There are 24 NORDPFADE to choose from for walks in the district of Rotenburg (Wümme). These circular hiking trails are between 5 and 32 kilometres long. The NORDPFAD Ostetal leads through one of northern Germany’s most beautiful unspoilt river landscapes: dense floodplain forests, wet meadows, reed beds and steep slopes shape the scenery. Cycling and circular hiking trails offer different ways to explore the routes and landscapes of the wider travel region.

More Nature and Cultural Destinations in the Wider Rotenburg Travel Region

Together, Tister Bauernmoor and Ekelmoor form a 1,220-hectare nature reserve complex in the district of Rotenburg (Wümme). The Moorbahn train travels through Tister Bauernmoor at 6 km/h. Typical raised-bog scenery features pools, grasses, heather plants and birch trees.

Sandbostel is a launch point for paddling trips on the Oste. The Oste is navigable only when water levels are high enough, so check the water level before setting out. Also in Sandbostel, the Lager Sandbostel Memorial offers young people a range of educational activities focused on commemoration, remembrance and learning at the historic site.

At LandPark Lauenbrück, 200 wild and domesticated animals live in spacious enclosures and large barns. Along with the hiking trails, the moor and the activities on the Oste, they illustrate the range of nature and cultural attractions in the wider Rotenburg travel region.
