Uetze offers several reasons to visit: at Lake Irenensee, water activities meet the surrounding reed marsh landscape and nature reserve. Trails through meadows and forests, and along waterways, offer further ways to experience the landscape. In Hänigsen, the tar pits and a post mill tell the story of local technology, while Erse-Park adds seasonal rides to the mix. When planning your trip and accommodation, it is worth keeping these different highlights in mind separately.

Water and scenery at Lake Irenensee

At 14 hectares, Lake Irenensee is the largest of the Spreewald lakes. It is surrounded by a reed marsh landscape and a nature reserve. The lake has a shallow-water zone, a water playground and a rope stretched across the water. Swimming is possible; check current bathing conditions before your trip. Pedal boats and go-karts are available for hire, although availability may vary by season. If being able to rent one is important to your stay, check in advance whether it will be available during your travel dates. This lets you combine the water activities with the natural setting of Lake Irenensee, without planning your trip around a single activity.

Hiking, cycling and horse riding

Cycling and hiking trails in Uetze run through meadows and forests and along waterways. On foot or by bike, you can experience the landscape from different perspectives; the trail settings mentioned range from meadows to the waterside. Activities such as horse riding are also available in Uetze; the town is also part of the Hannover Horse Region. In addition to the lakeside activities, trails and horse-related activities therefore offer distinct options for planning your trip.

Technology history in Hänigsen

The tar pits in Hänigsen are the oldest documented oil deposit in northern Germany. The open-air site features an oil laboratory, drilling and extraction equipment, and an old wooden drilling derrick. The various exhibits give the site a clear connection to the history of oil production.

The post mill in Hänigsen, a district of Uetze, was built in 1704. It opens to visitors on the annual Mill Day, held on the first Sunday in September. Check the event date before your trip. Another historic site is the two-post Kübbung house, which can be visited by prior arrangement with the Uetze Heritage Association. The two attractions have different visiting conditions: for the mill, the relevant date is Mill Day; for the house, a visit must be arranged in advance.

Seasonal rides at Erse-Park

Erse-Park offers a summer toboggan run, the Hara Kiri water slide, a historic carousel and a family roller coaster. The rides operate seasonally. If the rides are the main reason for your visit, take your travel dates into account and check in advance whether they are scheduled to operate then. The rides thus provide a different reason to visit from Uetze’s nature and history attractions.

Choose accommodation to suit your reason for visiting

These interests put different emphasis on planning your visit. If a seasonal attraction or a specific event date is decisive for you, check the relevant condition before booking.
