Eggermühlen offers a range of themes to explore: the Eggertal Discovery Trail follows a circular route through historic farming communities, the Poets’ Trail pairs poetry with a tangible landmark in the landscape, and marked hiking trails can be found in the Maiburg. During your stay, you can choose between architecture, literature and nature.

Circular Routes and Architecture in Eggermühlen

The Eggertal Discovery Trail is a circular route through the historic farming communities of Besten, Basum-Sussum, Döthen and Bockraden in the municipality of Eggermühlen. It offers cyclists and hikers impressions of culture and nature, as well as insights into the symbolism of modern architecture along the way. Nine covered shelters along the route provide places to take a break. The Sussum Stone Plateau is also located directly on the “Eggertal Discovery Trail” cycling circuit.

The distinction between the two Eggertal routes can help you choose a trail theme: the Discovery Trail combines a circular route with cultural and natural impressions and architecture. The Eggertal Poets’ Trail focuses on literature. Ten information boards along this route present poems by German poets and thinkers.

Literature and Landscape on the Poets’ Trail

Near Sussum, a 25-ton granite erratic boulder has been uncovered in a wooded area; Goethe’s “The Erlking” is presented nearby. The Poets’ Trail thus brings literary texts together with a tangible object in the landscape. The poems on the boards and the nearby erratic boulder provide different highlights within the same trail theme.

Hiking in the Maiburg

Marked hiking trails and the signposted “Vosspädken” forest nature trail are among the routes in the Maiburg Nature Reserve. This gives the Maiburg a different focus from the Eggertal routes: here, the trails in the protected area and the named forest nature trail take centre stage. When planning, you can consider this hiking option alongside Eggermühlen’s culture- and literature-related trails.

More Destinations in the Wider Osnabrück Travel Region

The wider Osnabrück travel region offers further themes in other places. At the Tuchmacher Museum Bramsche, fluffy woollen blankets are made on working machines that are over 100 years old. At the Kalkriese Museum and Park, exhibits about the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest are presented using multimedia and can be viewed by visitors. These examples focus on different subjects: the production of woollen blankets on historic machines and the multimedia presentation of exhibits.

At the Museum im Kloster in Bersenbrück, the permanent exhibition traces three periods through the history of the museum building’s use: the monastery from the 13th to the 18th century, the district office and administration in the 19th century, and the museum in the 20th century. The exhibition thus tells the story of the building in chronological order.

Bad Iburg also adds a nature and geology theme to the wider travel region. The treetop walk offers an immersive forest experience along an almost 600-metre route. Its step-free access tower is over 30 metres high and offers panoramic views of Iburg Castle and the Teutoburg Forest. The trail and its associated exhibition pavilion provide insights into the geological history of the Teutoburg Forest and are part of the UNESCO Global Geopark TERRA.vita.

At the dinosaur tracks in Bad Essen-Barkhausen, fossilised footprints can be seen on a steep rock face. The visitor area includes two dinosaur replicas, detailed information boards and a circular trail. This adds another theme to the wider Osnabrück travel region: visible traces of geological history.
