The municipality of Großenkneten stretches across a broad area between the Hunte and Lethe rivers, within the Wildeshausen Geest Nature Park. The Ahlhorn Fish Ponds, the Sager Heide circular hiking trail and the region’s pond farming give a stay several possible focal points: protected habitats, an extensive hiking route, and products from the fish smokehouse and the forestry office’s own hunting grounds. There is also a museum on the history of Ahlhorn air base, as well as recurring events at the pond complex. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth considering the landscape, trail length, local products and event dates. This makes it easier to decide whether your stay will focus mainly on nature, a hike, an event or history.

Ponds and protected habitats

The Ahlhorn Fish Ponds area was artificially created around 100 years ago. It includes habitats of statewide significance for species and ecosystem conservation, as well as the protection of landforms shaped by geological history. The Ahlhorn Fish Ponds protected area also includes valuable habitats for various dragonfly, butterfly, breeding bird and migratory bird species. Thanks to the near-natural character of some of the ponds and the Lethe lowlands, this wetland is home to an amphibian population unique in northwestern Lower Saxony.

Hiking and other activities

The Sager Heide circular hiking trail starts in Sage near Großenkneten and is around 17 kilometres long. It passes through heathland and pond landscapes, surrounded by stretches of woodland and their wildlife. The route therefore stands out for both its length and its varied landscapes; when planning your stay, it should be treated as a hike in its own right. The municipality of Großenkneten’s tour guide association offers visitors a varied programme of cycling and hiking tours, company visits and talks. This allows you to balance outdoor activities and more topic-focused events as separate parts of your trip.

Pond farming, products and event dates

At the pond farm’s shop, hikers can buy products from the fish smokehouse and the forestry office’s own hunting grounds. This is a way to combine an interest in nature with local products. At “Mai(b)rauch,” freshly smoked trout is served every year on 1 May, while stocks last, along with a small supporting programme and drinks. If you are coming for the trout, bear the availability notice in mind. The festival at the listed pond complex offers a different focus: it takes place every year in odd-numbered years on the last Sunday in September and attracts many thousands of people. For specific travel plans, it is advisable to check event dates in advance.

The hike centres on its starting point in Sage, its roughly 17-kilometre length and the landscape; for Mai(b)rauch and the festival, the scheduled event dates determine when to visit. These different options can help you decide whether to plan your trip around a particular time of year or the hike.

History in Ahlhorn

The “Fliegerhorst” Museum in Ahlhorn is dedicated to preserving and presenting the historical significance of Ahlhorn air base, which was founded in 1915. This adds a clearly defined historical focus—the development of the air base—to the landscape-related attractions.
