Three themes provide a guide to a trip in the district of Oldenburg: Cistercian history in Hude, the heathland and archaeological landscape near Wildeshausen, and nature experiences along the Hunte and on the Lethe Nature Trail. Each destination has a different focus. You can decide whether you would like to focus mainly on culture, walks or a canoe route.

Monastic history and architecture in Hude

Founded in 1232, the Cistercian monastery of Hude, called “Portus Sancte Marie” (“Harbour of Saint Mary”), quickly became the spiritual, economic and political centre of the eastern part of the County of Oldenburg. The museum at Hude Monastery presents models illustrating the building’s history, archaeological finds, maps and texts on Cistercian history. It also includes a scriptorium where visitors can write with a quill. The monastery ruins preserve the remains of a three-aisled basilica with an expansive transept. The church was originally more than 57 metres long and more than 24 metres wide. The museum’s themes and the building’s form offer different perspectives on the monastery’s history: through finds, maps and writing, and through the dimensions of the former church.

Heathland and archaeology at the Pestrup Burial Ground

South of Wildeshausen, the Pestrup Burial Ground lies in a landscape of heathland and pine trees. It is an archaeological site of significance beyond the region and the largest continuous heathland area in the district of Oldenburg. Both short and longer walks are possible there. This means that archaeological significance, open landscapes and the option of walks of varying lengths come together at one destination. If you would like to tailor the length of your walk to your day, the site offers both short and longer options.

Circular trail in the Wardenburg Lethe lowlands

The Lethe Nature Trail starts at Wardenburg Watermill by the Lethe Bridge, west of Wardenburg town centre in the “Lethe” nature reserve. The approximately 3-kilometre circular trail runs through the Wardenburg Lethe lowlands. Its approximate length and circular route make it a clearly defined option for a walk. If you are considering several activities, you can think of this trail as a manageable walk in its own right, alongside the region’s longer options.

Canoeing on the Hunte

The 40-kilometre canoe route on the Hunte runs from Wildeshausen to Oldenburg. As it passes through the Wildeshausen Geest, the river route goes by sandbanks, steep riverbanks and forests. The route has 11 launching and landing points, 10 rest areas and 11 nature trail information boards. Its facilities therefore offer different kinds of stops along the way: places to launch and land, rest areas and information boards along the nature trail. Compared with the approximately 3-kilometre Lethe circular trail, the canoe route is considerably longer; the two options also involve different activities. This can help you decide whether a walk or a river trip is better suited to your stay.

Another regional highlight near Harpstedt

In the wider region, the JAN HARPSTEDT heritage railway offers access to the forested area around Harpstedt. It adds another day-trip option to the cultural and landscape themes. Together, these destinations offer something for a range of interests, without requiring you to fit them all into a single day’s itinerary.

When looking for a hotel in Oldenburg, you can use these differences as a guide: would you like your trip to focus mainly on monastic history, walks through heathland and lowland landscapes, or a canoe trip? First decide on your main focus, then choose other themes based on what suits your planned stay.
