Gandesbergen is connected to Schweringen by the Schweringen Weser ferry. The high-cable chain ferry with an electric motor connects the two places across the river; its history dates back to the 16th century. Increasingly, cyclists and other visitors also use the ferry to cross the river. Please check the current ferry service for your specific journey. This will help you work the crossing into your onward route planning.
By bike: the Achter-Tour or Weser Cycle Route
The signposted Achter-Tour is about 54 kilometres long and follows a figure-eight route between Bruchhausen-Vilsen and Eystrup. Gandesbergen is on the route but is not the endpoint of the entire loop. On the route as described, you cross the Weser by ferry at Schweringen and then reach Gandesbergen travelling east. Less experienced cyclists can also comfortably complete the tour as a day trip.
Another route option is the fifth stage of the Weser Cycle Route, from Nienburg to Verden. On this stretch, the route crosses the river by the Schweringen-Gandesbergen Weser ferry, switches to the left bank of the Weser and continues via BĂĽcken to Hoya. This offers a different planning framework from the Achter-Tour: here, Gandesbergen is part of a stage, while the Achter-Tour is a loop between two other places. As ferry services and route conditions may change, check both before setting off.
Culture in the wider Nienburg destination
The wider Nienburg destination also has its own cultural attractions. The Nienburg Museum traces the development of the Middle Weser region, from the presence of the first people to the present day, across three historic buildings. Its main building is the Fresenhof, a Burgmannshof dating from the 16th century. The museum also includes the Asparagus Museum, the Biedermeier Garden and a lapidarium. The Neoclassical villa offers deeper insights into the 19th century.
Nienburg’s old town combines half-timbered façades, Weser Renaissance façades and brickwork; the town has a 1,000-year history. This gives it a different cultural focus from the ferry and route connections in Gandesbergen. The wider Nienburg destination is also home to the collegiate church of St. Maternian et St. Nicolai in Bücken. Its artistic treasures include a triumphal cross dating from 1230 and richly illustrated stained-glass windows from the 13th century. Another cultural site in the wider Nienburg destination is the historic Im Schünebusch barn quarter in Estorf. It preserves nine traditional barns. A local history museum there features exhibitions on agricultural tools, rural domestic culture, a bakehouse and village history. Groups can spend the night in a rustic cyclists’ barn by prior arrangement. Schinna Monastery, in the Schinna district of the municipality of Stolzenau, is a monument of significance beyond the region.
