Schweringen offers two distinct themes: insights into rural living and crafts, and the Weser Ferry with its unusual propulsion system. When planning your trip, you can choose between cultural history and a distinctive river crossing.

Local History Room and Crafts

The Schweringen Local History Room presents rural life and work from 1920 to 1950 across several rooms. Works by the artist Gottlieb Pot d'Or are also on display. The exhibition thus combines a look at everyday life during this period with works by a named artist.

The Wurthscheune and the Old Forge offer different focuses. The Wurthscheune displays agricultural tools and machinery. The Old Forge presents craft exhibits from the trades of shoemaking, saddlery and carpentry. Their themes are clearly distinct: one focuses on agricultural equipment, the other on three specific trades. If you are choosing which of Schweringen’s local exhibitions to visit based on your interests, you can distinguish between rural everyday life, agriculture and traditional crafts.

Weser Ferry and Achter Tour

The Schweringen Weser Ferry is the last vehicle ferry on the Middle Weser powered by an electric motor connected to the mains. Cyclists and other visitors travelling for tourism use it to cross the Weser. If you plan to take the ferry, check the current timetable in advance.

Another point of reference is the Kreuzkirche (chapel) in Schweringen: it is a waypoint on the Achter Tour. This puts two different aspects in focus—the ferry as a way to cross the river and the chapel as a landmark on a named tour.

More destinations in the wider Nienburg travel region

The wider Nienburg travel region also offers its own cultural and excursion themes. The Nienburg Museum traces the development of the Middle Weser region from the arrival of the first people to the present day across three historic buildings. Its main building is the Fresenhof, a manor house dating from the 16th century. The museum also includes the Asparagus Museum, the Biedermeier Garden and a lapidarium. The neoclassical villa offers deeper insights into the 19th century.

Nienburg’s old town offers another architectural perspective: timber-framed façades, Weser Renaissance façades and brickwork shape its appearance. The town has a 1,000-year history. In Bücken, the collegiate church of St. Maternian et St. Nicolai houses important art treasures, including a rood cross dating from 1230 and richly illustrated stained-glass windows from the 13th century.

For a trip on the water, Flotte Mittelweser offers sightseeing, experience and charter cruises on the Weser and Aller, departing from Nienburg or Verden. The operator publishes timetables separately; check the latest information if you are planning a trip. If you prefer a cycling route, the wider Nienburg travel region has a 23.6-kilometre circular route on the Weser Cycle Path between Landesbergen and Stolzenau. Check the route conditions before setting off. This lets you choose cultural interests and activities in the Nienburg travel region according to their own themes, without confusing them with Schweringen’s exhibition venues.
