Salzhausen offers several distinct highlights for a stay: the forest swimming pool with its large combination pool, the Pastor Bode Trail through the Luhe Valley, and architectural and cultural history at the church and hose tower. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can plan your trip around your preferred activities and their seasons.

Forest swimming pool and seasonal shuttle

Salzhausen Forest Swimming Pool has a large combination pool with a total water surface area of 1,165 m². It is divided into non-swimmer, swimmer and diving areas. Operating periods may vary by season, so check the latest operating information before your visit if you’re planning a day of swimming.

Heide-Shuttle Route 3 also runs through Salzhausen as a circular route. The shuttle operates seasonally. For your journey, check the operating days in the 2026 timetable and confirm the relevant date before setting off.

Hiking in the Luhe Valley and views from Paaschberg

The first stage of the Pastor Bode Trail runs from Lüneburg to Salzhausen and through the Luhe Valley. The route passes birch and beech trees, as well as meadows and fields. This stage therefore connects its destination in Salzhausen with a walk through the valley landscape described here. If you plan to hike the route, check trail conditions before setting out.

The observation tower on Paaschberg in Salzhausen offers a different view of the landscape: from there, you can look out across the landscape into the Luhe Valley. Further north, the Luhe Valley gives way to the Winsen Marsh. When planning, you can therefore choose between a hiking stage through the valley and a viewpoint overlooking it.

Church, hose tower and salt house

St. John’s Church in Salzhausen has a choir dating from 1464. The Gothic rib vault and triumphal arch also date from this period. If you’d like to visit the church, daily opening times are listed for the summer months, from Easter to the Harvest Thanksgiving Festival: 10 a.m. to noon and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Check before you travel whether these times are still current.

The hose tower in Salzhausen was built in 1902. Together with the fire station, it is an official cultural site of the Kiekeberg Open-Air Museum. During the summer half of the year, visitors can explore the development of regional firefighting. The visit thus combines a look at historic architecture with a topic from regional cultural history.

The Salt House offers a different focus: a 45-minute session in the salt cave, a 20-minute stay in the brine room with salt mist, and relaxation in Brainlight massage chairs. The three offerings differ in duration and format, so you can plan your visit around your preferred experience.

The Dörpschün Salzhausen is available for private celebrations and exhibitions, provided the date has not already been booked by the municipality or Salzhausen e.V. If you’re planning to use the Dörpschün for an event, confirm the date in advance.

Seasonal information and visit planning

When choosing a date, keep the seasonal information for each attraction in mind: the forest swimming pool and Heide-Shuttle operate seasonally; the development of regional firefighting can be explored during the summer half of the year. The church’s listed visiting times apply from Easter to the Harvest Thanksgiving Festival and should be checked for up-to-date information in advance. If you’re hiking, you should also check trail conditions before setting out.
