Getelo stretches along the German-Dutch border. Mander and Vasse, in the municipality of Tubbergen, are neighboring Dutch villages. The Söven Pölle archaeological site and the Uelsen–Getelo–Halle route complement this border location with archaeological history and cycling. If you are considering Getelo as a travel destination, you can take its border location, landscape history and cycling into account as different interests when making your choice.

Söven Pölle: Burial Mounds and Juniper

The prehistoric Söven Pölle archaeological site consists of seven burial mounds. It is designated as a nature reserve, and the enclosed area is covered with heathland and juniper bushes. Söven Pölle thus brings together archaeological traces with heathland and juniper vegetation. The site is located on a side road between Getelo and Itterbeck, which travelers pass along.

From Moorland to Meadows and Fields

Former peatland areas in Getelo and Itterbeck were drained and cultivated in the late 1950s. Areas where peat was once cut are now fertile meadows and farmland. This information offers two perspectives on the landscape: the historical intervention in the peatlands and the present-day state of former peat-cutting areas. Those interested in landscape change as well as archaeological traces will find another part of the local history here.

Cycling: Destinations and Flexible Routes

The Uelsen–Getelo–Halle route passes through juniper scrub, woodland and open fields before reaching the Lönsberg observation tower. Wayfinding signs help cyclists find the routes locally. Three rural scenic routes around Uelsen mostly follow well-surfaced gravel paths through meadows, woods and fields. They are part of the regional numbered-junction system and can be combined or planned individually. The three routes are considered suitable for day trips, family cycling tours and short breaks in nature. When choosing, you can consider two different questions: Would you like to orient yourself around a named destination such as the Lönsberg observation tower, or would you rather plan or combine one of the three scenic routes individually?

The Grafschaft Bentheim as a Regional Setting

Across the wider travel destination of the Grafschaft Bentheim, heathland, raised and lowland bogs, wooded ridges and the Vechte river valley alternate. Kunstwegen represents another theme there: this open-air museum of contemporary art, nature and history extends for more than 180 kilometers through the Vechte valley. More than 80 sculpture projects line the route, which also passes through Nordhorn. A local culinary specialty of the Grafschaft Bentheim is Grafschafter Kräuterwacholder. It is made using wheat from the Grafschaft Bentheim and juniper berries from the Tillenberge nature reserve in Nordhorn and the Spöllberg natural monument in Uelsen. At the county level, the main route of the Grafschafter Fietsentour also offers a longer cycling option: it is about 220 kilometers long and passes through all the municipalities in the district.
