A barrier-free observation walkway, a circular trail through the Ochsenmoor, and several birdwatching spots give a stay in Hüde different highlights. Those wishing to explore nature and the landscape can choose between a purpose-built observation site, a themed trail and viewpoints; St. Mary’s Church in Burlage adds a distinct historical dimension. This makes it possible to choose according to your interests without treating all the offerings as the same kind of excursion.
Nature in Hüde: Exhibition, Garden and Circular Trail
The nature conservation station in Hüde is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; check the opening hours on the official website before your visit. Its accessible exhibition covers fauna and flora as well as the formation of the Dümmer. The nature discovery garden, established by the Dümmer Nature Conservation Association, is right next to the station. Its features include a willow spider made from living willows, dry-stone walls, wildflower areas, an herb garden, a bog garden and an orchard.
The Dümmer nature discovery trail is a 4.5-kilometer circular route. It starts at the Dümmer Nature Conservation Station in Hüde, passes through the Ochsenmoor nature reserve and continues to the southern shore of the Dümmer. Thirteen information boards share facts about the formation of the landscape around the Dümmer, its wildlife and plants, and the changing relationship between people and the lake. Unlike a single observation site, the themes here are spread along a route.
Birdwatching: Walkway, Platform and Tower
The accessible observation walkway through the reed belt is about 100 meters long and four meters wide; it has turning areas for wheelchair users and ends at a sheltered birdwatching hide. Some viewing windows are positioned at seated height, offering good opportunities for wheelchair users and children to observe wildlife. The Stork Observation Platform in Hüde is open to all visitors free of charge. Before visiting, check whether the access arrangements have changed.
In autumn 2025, a rotating wave-shaped bench was installed in Hüde opposite the Kammerahl family’s stork nests, offering a place to watch the storks. The Hohe Sieben observation tower offers a different view: its steps have anti-slip edge profiles, and it also has a circular handrail. From the tower, you can see the lake, as well as birds, sailors and windsurfers. If you plan to visit the tower, check in advance whether it is accessible.
History in Burlage
The Protestant St. Mary’s Church in Burlage is in a district of Hüde and adds a historical highlight alongside the nature-related attractions. It originated as a Benedictine monastery. Part of the church and some furnishings remain from the monastery; the present church dates mostly from the 16th century. Alongside landscapes and birdwatching, Hüde therefore also offers a tangible connection to the history of the area.
