Wremen combines a North Sea green beach with maritime history and signposted trails. You can explore the village according to your interests: experience the Wadden Sea at the beach, learn more about fishing at the harbor and in the museum, or explore the village trail and the storm trail. St. Willehadi Church adds another cultural highlight.

Green Beach, Mudflats and Views of the Weser

Wremen Beach is a North Sea green-beach resort right by the dike, in front of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Wadden Sea. Families particularly appreciate its shallow water. You can experience the mudflats on guided mudflat walks. This offers two different ways to take in the coastal landscape: the beach by the dike and the mudflats explored on a guided walk.

Another distinctive landmark is the “Kleiner Preuße” lighthouse. It offers excellent views of the Weser estuary. Together with the beach and the Wadden Sea, it forms a coastal landscape that can be appreciated both for its scenery and for the views of the Weser estuary.

Cutter Harbor, Church and Fishing History

Wremen Cutter Harbor is the oldest and southernmost cutter harbor on the Wurster coast. The village’s maritime history is also explored at the Museum of Mudflat Fishing, which presents the history and conditions of mudflat fishing on the North Sea coast. Its centerpiece is the “MS Koralle,” which visitors can view on land. The harbor and museum highlight different aspects of fishing: the harbor as a distinctive place on the Wurster coast, and mudflat fishing as the subject of the exhibition.

St. Willehadi Church in Wremen is the largest and oldest church in the Wurster Land. If you would like to add more fishing experiences to your stay, there is also the “Claudia”: the shrimp trawler has been converted for guest trips and offers excursions to the container pier in Bremerhaven as well as fishing trips. Check availability before planning a trip.

Signposted Trails with Different Routes

The signposted village trail is a circular route through maritime Wremen, suitable for beginners. The also signposted storm trail leads from the visitor center along the cutter harbor to the “Kleiner Preuße” lighthouse at the entrance to Wremen Harbor. The two routes therefore differ in what their descriptions emphasize: the village trail is a circular route through the village, while the storm trail runs from the visitor center via the harbor to the lighthouse.

Wremen and the Wurster North Sea Coast

The wider Wurster North Sea Coast destination has a total of four green, grassy beaches; this figure refers to the entire Wurster North Sea Coast. The churches in Spieka and Cappel also offer their own historical points of interest: the origins of St. George’s Church in Spieka date back to 1319. St. Peter and Paul’s Church in Cappel is known for its 17th-century organ, built by Arp Schnitger.

Midlum is home to the Midlum Mill, a gallery-style Dutch windmill and one of the few still-operational windmills of its kind in the district of Cuxhaven. The Meinecke miller family built it in 1857 with two milling stones and a roller mill. Baking days and events are held regularly at the mill; check the current schedule when planning a specific visit.
