Otterndorf lies right on the North Sea. In the more than 600-year-old Old Town, historic warehouses and museums sit alongside public art; paths, leisure activities and water sports are among the possible themes for a stay by the water.

Old Town, Organ and Literature

Well-preserved 17th- and 18th-century warehouses are part of the historic Old Town’s character. St. Severi Church, also known as the “Farmer’s Cathedral,” is the largest church in the Land Hadeln region, with predominantly Baroque furnishings. It acquired its present exterior form in preparation for the construction of the Dietrich Christoph Gloger organ, completed in 1741. It is considered the largest Baroque organ in the Elbe-Weser organ region and was named Organ of the Year in 2020.

You can explore literary history at the Johann Heinrich Voß Literature Museum. The former schoolmaster’s house is where Johann Heinrich Voß lived with his family from 1778 to 1782. The exhibition explores his life as a poet, editor and translator, publicist, friend and private individual. An audio station and a multimedia station offer insights into his life and work.

Other cultural attractions offer different perspectives: The Museum of Non-Objective Art is an art museum at Marktstraße 10. The listed Neoclassical garden house is centrally located in the Old Town, surrounded by domestic gardens and the “Eschweide” park, right by the historic Süderwall. The Otterndorf Sculpture Park brings public art to life along the Medem and in the Old Town. The sculptures invite you to explore, pause, reflect and take photographs.

Water and Leisure

At the mouth of the Elbe, just behind the dike, Otterndorf offers a water and landscape park with leisure activities. The recreation area beside the “See Achtern Diek” campsite includes three bathing lakes, playgrounds, giant slides, a climbing ship, and beach volleyball and skateboarding areas. This brings together a range of options for a stay by the water, without requiring you to focus on just one activity.

Kap Jakob natural beach is temporarily closed. It formed naturally through sand deposits, is surrounded by a belt of reeds and is directly connected to the sailing harbour. Before planning a visit, check whether access has reopened. Otterndorf’s water sports include swimming in the sea, kayaking on the Medem, stand-up paddleboarding on the lake, rowing, kiteboarding and windsurfing, water skiing and wakeboarding. As activities may change over time, it is best to check specific options in advance.

Paths and Getting Around Otterndorf

For those who want to explore on foot, the unspoilt Philosophenweg offers a described walking route: It starts at the orchard at the beginning of Müggendorfer Straße and follows the Medem to the recreation area beside the “See Achtern Diek” campsite. Several well-signposted regional, national and international cycling routes pass the North Sea resort of Otterndorf. As routes and signage may change, it is worth checking the current route before setting out.

A trip on the Medem is another option: the illuminated “Onkel Heinz” boat is moored at Großer Specken in the historic Old Town and offers trips at dusk. Schedules and operator details may change seasonally; check the times before making plans.

The seasonal CUXLINER Strand-Express runs from the railway station through the historic Old Town to the green beach and the recreation area. If you plan to take it for your arrival or to reach these destinations, check the timetable in advance. This lets you decide how to balance culture, paths and water activities during your stay, and then find a hotel in Otterndorf.
