Meißendorf is a destination for nature experiences, where water, heath and wildlife watching each have their own appeal. In the village of Meißendorf lies the Meißendorfer Teiche/Bannetzer Moor nature reserve, which contains the largest continuous body of water in the Lüneburg Heath. Hüttenseepark, the heath blossom festival and other activities offer a range of reasons to visit. If you’re looking for hotels in Meissendorf, you can start by considering whether ponds and birdwatching, heath blossom or a festival will shape your stay.

Nature at Hüttensee

Hüttenseepark has a swimming lake with a bathing and play island. There’s also beach volleyball, mini golf, table tennis, table football and a Robinson adventure playground. The park therefore offers a range of swimming, play and activity options. Observation towers along the circular trail around Hüttensee offer opportunities to watch white-tailed eagles, ospreys and cranes. Here, birdlife takes centre stage, while the park brings together a range of specific leisure activities. You can decide whether to focus your visit more on activities in the park or on observing nature.

The Meißendorfer Teiche/Bannetzer Moor nature reserve also gives the landscape a distinctive focus: its continuous body of water is the largest in the Lüneburg Heath. Together with the observation towers and circular trail, it offers a nature experience that goes beyond individual leisure activities. This gives you two different interests to combine in planning your trip: time by the water and activities at Hüttenseepark, or taking in the landscape and birdlife along the trail.

Heath Blossom in Season

The Meißendorf heath is surrounded by birch trees, juniper and pine. In August and September, it transforms into a sea of purple blossoms; the timing of the bloom can vary slightly from year to year. If you’re travelling specifically for the heath blossom, keep this seasonal variation in mind when planning. You can reach the heath via Kapellenweg; parking is available to the left of the cemetery. This gives you both a named access point and a landmark for parking when you visit.

Heath Blossom Festival and Tradition

The Meißendorf Heath Blossom Festival has been celebrated since 1964 and attracts numerous visitors every year. Meißendorf is the only village in the district of Celle to have a Heath Queen. During the festival, the new Heath Queen is taken in a festive procession through the decorated village to the coronation site on the banks of the Meiße, where the ceremonial coronation takes place. The festival thus combines the heath blossom with a distinct cultural occasion and a set programme in the village. If you’d like to visit during the festival, check the event dates before travelling.

More Ways to Watch Wildlife

At NABU Gut Sunder, a specially designed visitor space displays wildlife footage captured day and night in high image quality by a camera system, for close observation. This is a different way to watch wildlife from the observation towers at Hüttensee: there, visitors can look for white-tailed eagles, ospreys and cranes, while the visitor space shows recorded wildlife images.

MeidoSkydive offers a different kind of activity: parachuting courses and tandem jumps are available, and spectators are welcome at events. The range of experiences therefore extends from wildlife watching in natural surroundings and in the visitor space to parachuting. Which of these options appeals to you most can shape your stay in Meissendorf just as much as the choice between the waterside landscape, heath blossom and the festival.
